Met a few guys over one of the Flaming Gorge's kokanee spawning beds on September 4th and had a blast jigging. Too bad the burbot were already there too. Check out this male kokanee is full spawning colors.

Were the burbot you caught showing evidence of feeding on kokanee eggs again? Thanks, Ryno

I don't know for sure if the one burbot that was caught was eating kokanee eggs, but it was caught on a pile of kokanee in about 60 feet of water. It was nice and fat. The guy that caught it did not cut it open to check its stomach contents, but it would be a safe bet it was full of eggs.

Thanks for the picture. I wonder if critters think we look as vastly different as we age as male kokanee look to us during this time of the year.

Yeah, it sucks. The burbot have definitely learned to take advantage of that opportunity. At least you harvested it (?), but kokes don't need anymore predation..... Thanks, Ryno

I had no idea they would still be good to eat when all red... My little local lake was stocked with mostly sterile females, so the bucks are the only ones all red on the shores.

I grill, fry, smoke and can them throughout the season with great success. When the kokanee are as mature as the ones posted I have found the meat mushy, white/gray and very poor tasting. I let them do their thing before they die unless someone wants one on the wall.
