Spent 4 hrs on the Willamette River near 205 bridge in Oregon City Shad fishing Yesterday evening,My wife and myself were lucky to land and put 40 fish in the boat. These are great fish to take a youngster out and teach fishing tech . They are the number #1 crap Bait for the fall season, make an exceltent Halibate Bait, and also a great Sturegon Bait. They are so much fun to hook and great fighters.

There not !!! Shad have a lot of bones/ had to be some where on a family get together for graduation on Saturday. So we fish for 4 hrs that morning put another 37 in the boat. Thet run up to 4 lbs great on light tackle. Starte record is 7 Lb something.

Were u using darts? I'm going out today after work. Good heads up on the sturgeon and crab bait. U hit that right on the head. Last year I hauled in my biggest sturgeon to date on some freshly caught shad. If my math was right (height x gerth squared) it was about 300lbs at 8ft. Not only that, had well over 50 jumbos at the coast out of 5 trips.

The Medicine I'm using 36 inch drop. three way swivel 18 inches to a 1/8 oz chartruse green jig head with a cheartruse green squirrel tail grub. Shad are line shy I'm useing 6 lb leader line . Keep moving if your slow at anchor. The females are starting to show up and they are close to 4 lbs or so glad I could help. I like the Wallamette because I'm only using 2 oz of weight to hold bottom. In the Columbia you will need bigger tackle 6/8 oz to hold. You can use lighter tackle

Went out yesterday for two hours after work(my girlfriend was being less then enthusiastic about fishing). Landed 4 lost 3. I wasn't in the right seam. Guys right next to us.... nailing them. That's shad fishing.... Mr. Mikes rig above is spot on. Exactly what I use and wat I used yesterday. Avoid the long leaders u see everyone using. Long leaders sink. Try the small divers that look like crank baits. Can't think of the name of them off the top of my head. Then use a long leader. Approx. 5ft. Will be out Saturday with my nephew and plan on nailing them... p.s. if ur feeling frisky use a dick night with a dropper 2-3 oz. People hook springers a lot more than u think. A nice surprise when ur shad fishing. Catch less shad but if u need justone more springer in the ice chest it might be worth it

I have a Shad tournament this weekend about 20 of us, be there myself these fisherman take this verrrrry serious. Your thinking about small jet divers/I would suggest not the way to go.You need to find the right seam its all about the correct water dept. When Sunny fish deeper when cloudy shallower.

I wouldn't go with the diver. Just a suggestion seeing how there was a guy trolling next to us was landing one every pass by me with that rig. I've also heard for these high water conditions to fish longer dropper and when the waters low. I hope we get a lot of sun brakes tomorrow. Always makes the bite instantly hot. Oh! And all u out there don't forget to jig every now again. 95% of my takedowns are during or right after I jig

Had a Shad Tournament this Saturday had 86 fisherman show up it was a event from hell for me first off I left my shop and had just bought a new Marine cooler 70 qt size. I hit 205 intersection it flys out of the boat I back up some to retrieve it not much traffic on Hwy 205 at 6.00 am this large box truck changes lane and heads for the cooler bang my cooler is toast he has this smile on his face. I figure I'll return to my shop pick up another cooler. need a cooler to put the shad in. I turn the corner to tight and hit the curb with my boat trailer BANG blow the tire I'm out $245.00 and I ain't there yet been averaging 40 fish per trip I catch one shad my son catches one shad and Jay a friend gets 6, just one of them days. I was hoping I didn't sink the boat.

I have been down to Clackamette park a couple of times and put on a clinic.
I took a shad virgin friend out after work and we spanked them.

Put in at Clackamette boat launch around 6pm. and anchored just up from the mouth of the Clack after marking a bunch of fish at 21ft. Set the anchor upstream about 35 yards in 18ft. and backed up to the slot. The water was great color and moving. 3ft. dropper and 4ft. leader to a shad killer produced over 50 strikes with 32 landed and 6 crackered at the boat in two hours fishing.
My buddy thought he was fighting a steelhead on a trout rod after the first hookup. We had a blast and pegged the fun meter.
Another buddy is down in the ocean using those fish for crab and halibut bait today.

Peace, Tom
