Hoping for another good year at the lake. Dust off the rods as the fish and weather will be heating up soon.

Soon as the conditions are good to launch, I'm in. I can't wait, I'm hoping we get a full tank again this year. Seems like the water level is way off from last year, and this dry weather is not helping much either.

I think Anderson will be late this year due to run off and murky water conditions early. There is a bunch of snow down low and and there will be high water early this year. I think the best fishing will be in the fall creek area early if it is not muddy

You are correct regarding the amount of water in the reservoir last year vs. now - check it out: https://www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/wygraph.html?list=and%20af&daily=and%20af
And there is a lot of snow in the high country now. Most of the Boise Basin is well above 100% of normal (except Trinity Mtn. notably) https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/reports/UpdateReport.html?report=Idaho&format=SNOTEL+Snowpack+Update+Report
Plus a lot of precip. is predicted for the end of Feb., beginning of Mar. http://wxmaps.org/outlooks.php Select precip. as the "parameter" in that little drop down menue.

Looks like I spoke too soon on the weather, pollackoke that is some serious data. Looks like we are going to get the water, I just dont like it muddy. I'm ready to see how big those chinook got over the winter.

I fished for chinook until the first part of January at anderson--I would normally catch 6+ per trip--From early October on I caught over 50 I think--Almost all the fish were 6 to 15" I caught one 8.5 and a few around 3-4 pounds--I will start fishing for them again in March--It seems the 6 to 15" fish are very easy to catch and anything over 2 lbs is very few and hard to catch
I fished 50 to 100 ft deep mostly in the Dam area and around Fall creek---Most of the fish were in good shape and fat--I didn't keep any other than the 8.5 pounder

Dang you hammered them! I never targeted them, I would only pick them up fishing for kokanee. I only caught around 8 (all about 14-16inch), all around the power lines next to Fall cr. Not sure how to target them specifically, but I quit fishing at end of Aug when the spawn really hit and the bite stopped and to get my hunt on. Sounds like that was prime time.

I live in Mtn Home so it is real easy for me to fish by the dam. I just can't seem to catch the chinook in the 3+ range for some reason. I know there are several in there but I can't get them to bite---I encountered the same thing at Deadwood this last year

I have yet to land one of the big ones in Anderson in 3 attempts targeting them exclusively. I don’t think they are there in truly fishable numbers because I didn’t see that many on the finder. Few and far between to say the least. When I was banging the big ones at deadwood they were stocking 5k+ per year and and all the fish were congregated in one relatively small area of the lake. The anglers that I spoke to were throwing the 3-5 lbs fish back.
The most they ever stocked in Anderson was about 35k and they haven’t come close to that in recent years. Add in the fact that the lake is relatively huge and people are keeping the babies and it’s no wonder you can’t buy a big one. I’m not trying to shame anyone for keeping a 22” fish or even a 16” fish for that matter. That is what they are there for, but if anyone is keeping them, there will never be enough left over to catch the 10 lbs fish.
I have never seen more than maybe 20 marks of 10 lbs fish on Anderson in a day and I couldn’t get them to bite. Consider the fact that I used to see a few hundred marks of 10 lbs fish on deadwood to maybe catch 4-5 on a good day. Seeing 20 big fish is never going to cut it.
On a side note, while trying for chinook in Anderson, I have never caught so many huge squaw fish in my life. 5-7 lbs squaw fish put up a good fight. Released them rapidly off of the swim deck. :-)

I have made 20+ trips last spring and fall targeting chinook at anderson and I have only caught 1/2 dozen over 3 lbs and only one 8.5 pounder there is never a problem catching fish 6 to 15 inches but the larger ones is a different story. There should be some 2nd and 3rd year fish somewhere in the pond. I have caught them from Deer creek to the dam on a variety of lures and bait. I primarily fish with Herring as it is always the best bait for results for me---I have been fishing for them for 3 years with only one bigger fish--There are some very large Rainbows in anderson and I plan to work on them this year along with the chinook

When I fished a local lake, we target land lock Chinook. The go to bait was herring we called them firecrackers. The small 16/20 inches also were hooked on fire crackers that 4/5 inches herring color coded yellows my largest was 10# at the time a state record but Oregon didn't recognize the species. Did use a stinger threbble also If the water you fish is very clear loose your flasher. Acted like a Repellent. Productive went way up
We did land a few from 8/10# range. Believe or not I caught 16 inch trout on herring. Just food for thought hope it helps, they were deep on DR.
rem40xb1
02-28-2019, 09:47 AM
I use yellow and green coded herring. I also use a pro troll lighted flasher if I fish below 50 ft. I don't have any problem catching fish but they are mostly all small 6-15 inches. It seems like the fish don't bite after they reach 15 inches plus--I have been catching the same size fish for the last 3 years. I can just about get a fish for every bait I take sometimes 2 on the same bait
mrmike
02-28-2019, 01:36 PM
The fish stocked were are Spring Chinook very aggressive fish green label 6/7 inch bait awful big. We used Yellow label 3 1/2 To 4 1/2 inches hard to fine then Orange label 4 1/2 / 5 1/2 then reds 5/6 inches green 6/7 inches blues 7/8 inches purples 8/9 inches blacks 9/10 . Didn't plug cut them trolled whole. I don't know much about your lake but the larger fish are there good luck.
rem40xb1
03-01-2019, 10:29 PM
I also caught a 5lb rainbow on Herring along with several large Bull trout--And a few monster squaw fish--I fished with the Yellow and Green size herring and both worked very well---I will try it without a flasher and slow my speed down to 1 mph

Fished the SFB yesterday, and made a quick stop on the way out, thought you guys you like to see what the dock looks like. looks like its going to be a while before we can launch. There is a good 2-4ft of snow in the way, and the ramp is still way out of the water.
rem40xb1
03-07-2019, 11:22 AM
That answers my question about chinook fishing--It is going to be a while before I can launch--The river is going to run very high this year and make the fishing later--I thinking mid june before the kookanee fishing is real good--It is going to be very murky early around the curlew area
Maybe middle of june before you can go to Deadwood

Down fishing the BSF again yesterday, a lot of snow has melted around the river since my last trip on the 6th. Last trip the roads were a snowy/muddy mess, everything is dry and the graders are working on the roads. I think the warm days are starting to help us but the cold nights are not. It was 19 deg's @ 1000, I didn't think I would be worth looking at the dock yet, but I will on my next trip.

I know the main Elk Creek is at the marker where you cant launch a boat
The low water ramp is available when the snow melts a little more

I just came from the elk creek ramp--The main paved ramp can't be used--The low water ramp can be used--There were 2 trucks with boat trailers parked in the ramp area--It will be difficult to launch to launch a larger boat because of the limited area to turn around and the lower ramp road is muddy--You will need a 4wd for sure

I checked out the launch at the end of the day, looks like the conditions got a bit worst from when you were down there rem40xb1. I fished Anderson for the first time this past weekend both Saturday and Sunday. I Launched from the low water ramp at elk creek. Was out on the water from around 9-2 both days. The weather was great Saturday, as was the fishing. I ended up with a sunburn and 9 kokanee from 13-17". Lost a handful and relased a few chinook. Sunday's weather wasn't great with dark clouds, wind and some rain. A bit chilly, but not too bad. Kept 8 kokes, released 5ish sub 12'' kokes and another 5ish sub 12'' chinook. All in all, it was a good weekend.

I only fished to lester creek and as far as i could see there was no ice. There was some debris, i suspect it will get worse as the run off increases. All in all it was another good trip.

Fished Yesterday from about 9-5, first run of the year and man the word is out you can get your boat in for sure. It was a long slow day for us, we boated 2 kokes, 2 nooks, and 1 rainbow. We only marked one school all day, and end up catching one out of that group. We used different colors, depths, long lines, and we just couldn't mark any fish. We talked to a few at the launch and they said it was slow as well but they were still catching a few. Anyone boating any good numbers would like to share the depths their catching them?

My first three trips I kept 25 kokanee. 5 hours a trip. All the fish were caught from 45-74' Mostly in that 60ish range. I have been trying to keep one rod with a longer set back so I can adjust that rod up or down if I mark a school. Not sure what everyone else has been doing, but I've been happy with the results. Hope this helps. Good luck

Thanks Jack, I was defiantly fishing to shallow. My thoughts were, not seeing them on the fish finder, they had to be on top and they were dodging my boat. But the two kokes we did catch were at the 50ft range. Gotta try a few different locations next run and hope for the best.

Took the wife out yesterday. We launched at the dam along with everyone else. We fished from 8am to 4pm. We ended up with 8 kokes and released 3 trout. We didn't mark any fish until the fall creek area, there we found one good school that really wanted to play but we had a hard time staying on top of them. We fished 4 poles from 15-60ft and didn't catch anything deeper than 30ft. The fish seemed to like the willow blade flashers best, which is odd for me. Color didnt seem to matter much. On a side note the meat of the kokes is much more bright orange than the fish we've been catching at lucky peak and arrowrock.

Fishing was slow fished from noon to dark caught 9 lost 6. Could only catch them shallow 10 ft range most came longe lining with spinners. When we would catch them all the rods would go off. Then nothing for hours even on the same school. The water was raising fast but has good color. Don’t forget rain gear and a heater cause it’s still winter up there.

We fished the narrow just downstream from Lime creek and brought 8 home. Released 5 nice rainbows and a couple small kokes. They were very sporadic and I changed colors quite a bit. Started off on top then went from 13ish to 30 feet and had hits on all of them. Is there a technique or something different that can be done to not lose so many right before the net?

Use a two hook setup and fight the fish to exhaustion farther from the boat. The short line near the boat has less give and allows the fish more leverage on the hook to pull it loose. Kokanee have a tendency to go crazy when they see the boat and that is when the line is the shortest.

im hoping to get out next weekend. I just wanted to say how odd I find it when I hear you guys say you catch trout. I have fished Anderson for 7 years. I have caught hundreds and hundreds of kokes and nooks. The only trout I ever caught was a Bull. Last year we had 3 trips with 2 man limits, and 3-4 with 20-30 fish. No bows ever

And don’t high stick em. I see a lot of guys standing up on their toes in their boat high sticking their rod, reeling basically over their head. If you bring em to the surface too fast close to the boat they’re gonna freak out, roll like crazy and spit that hook. Keep em below the surface right to the boat and have a good net man. If you’re doing that already, try sharpening your hooks and keep a nice steady pressure on the line when working em and bringing em in. This time of year their mouths are pretty soft and you can’t horse em in.

I’ve never thought about sharpening hooks! Most everything yesterday was new stuff I pulled out of my Charge Box. (I didn’t want to leave Chris’ with just an empty box LoL)
Keep the rod tip down more then? I’m use to fighting a lot bigger so keeping the tip up is just habit. Letting the fish fight the rod I mean.

I have had good luck keeping the rod tip low to the water when they get close to the boat. Don't lift up, pull to the side. Using a snubber also seems to help. Watch the video "controlling the kok" http://www.kokabowtackle.com/videos.html

We fished Saturday from 7a-7p and ended up with 15 kokes and a handful of chinook and trout. 5 nice kokes around 18 inches and the rest were in the 13-14 inch range. Most fish we caught were 10ft of shallower. Blue was the most effective color for us. We also fished Sunday for a half day and it was very slow. We caught one koke and lost two others. The bonus was this very nice18inch trout. It made 5 good runs on me before we could land it. Super fun. I'm happy to report curlew is open and the docks are in place. However it seems like it will be a few more weeks before the water gets high enough to use the docks.

Hey UncleLucas, very nice! Were they hitting in a particular area? My buddy and I were there on Sat too from 7:30 to 4. Covered pretty much the whole reservoir from the dam up to Curlew. Saw the most boats we've ever seen on Anderson. Maybe 60-80! Quite a few at Fall Creek. But didn't see very many going for a net though. In fact, I think our net was the busiest we saw. We caught plenty of trout and a few chinooks. But 0 Kokes - which I thought was very strange. We were fishing between the surface and 22' all day (no downriggers, just 0 to 3oz of lead). Used rainbow dodgers and ford fenders along with various colored hoochies and spinners, getting hits on all the combos. Again, just no Kokes. Bummer!

All the fish we caught from lime creek upstream were chinooks. We caught kokes from lime creek all the way down to fall creek with the majority of them being in that big bay area between. We even had a quadruple just east of the powerlines and landed all four! We caught lots of fish with nothing ever showing on the finder. Blue and silver kokabow Dodger with a blue/pink squid with a short leader was the hot one.

We fished Saturday 4-13 from 8:15-3:00. We landed three Kokes and two chinook, lost two really nice Kokes near the net and had a few other release clips but missed the fish. Hooked the chinook at 25ft and the Kokanee at 45

Does anyone know if the docks are in the water at Curlew. I just bought a 19ft bayliner and would rather not have to try and beach a fiberglass boat by myself, the bow is not easy to get on as it is a cuddy cabin.

It is great for the ramps, but the docks at Curlew are short so I am not sure the docks are in the water yet.

Fished 4/19 from 7am to 2pm. Tried lots of different setups and they preferred a big wobbler with a lipped squid, and also got hits on a large watermelon dodger with lipped lure. They wanted something with lots of action and movement. Wish I had figured that out before noon. I might have brought home a few more fish

Was there yesterday. The docks were in the water - barely. Maybe about 20-30’. Enough for 1 boat on either side.

Got to Anderson around 12, did not even get a bite, varied depths, lures, colors, and corn and still nothing. I was not marking very many and only marked one school. The new boat did work well with the trolling motor and downriggers mounted.
A big thanks to the gentlemen that assisted in loading the boat on the trailer, hand loading in high winds is a chore with this size of boat.

Going from Curlew towards the dam, past Lime Creek it gets narrow and then opens back up before the power lines. That’s the spot I call the narrows. Not sure if that’s where everyone else is referring to.

Just got back from Anderson. We got there late in the evening Friday and fished a few hours. Caught 2 and lost 1. We fished Saturday from 630am-5pm. We got 23 in the boat and lost at least that many and had I can't even count how many takedowns that didn't hook up. We fished from curlew all the way down to fall creek. Most fish we caught were between the narrows and fall creek. Didnt get a bite below 10ft and pink/green were the best colors for us.

We fished Anderson on Thursday evening for the last two hours of the day and caught 6. Friday the morning bite was ok around lime creek and the narrows. We got 8 there and ventured down toward fall creek during the day. It was very slow all day and we just caught a couple. We got back to lime creek area and the bite was red hot for the last hour, we managed to get 15 more the last hour of the day. We fished till 11am today and only got four and lost 3. Overall the bite was slow for us. We ended up with 35 kokes, released a few dinks and two chinook. Everything we caught was 10ft or less and there wasn't really any lure or combo that was hot. Water temp was around 55F and it seems like the lake level has stabalized.

UncleLucas, thanks for good fishing report that you posted on 4/27. We were camp and fish there on Thurs 4/25 ~ 5/1/2019 also my brother and his wife came from Southern California on next day, they towed their own boat.
We fished afternoon on Thurs 4/25 after 5.5 hrs without any hit then late evening we caught 5 (wife caught 4:)DR 5'. Long line pole 1/2oz sinker fordfender + WR green/orange
Friday 4/26was slow, we caught only 2 kok, release a rainbow and ~14" Chinook. Brother and his wife caught only 1 trout. Their 70 HP Johnson boat motor VRO fuel pump failed to pump fuel to carburetor, so they troll around Curlew area with their 4hp honda.
Sat 4/27 we caught 5 kok and brother caught 1 kok. It was slow for us.
Sunday was windy, brother and I fished on my boat from 10:00AM ~ 7:00PM. trolled from Curlew to Fall Creek. We caught 14 Kok, mostly by Fall Creek. He lost 6 fish one after an other, the fishing pole that he fish was ocean fishing rod type..:-) You're right! We didn't fish more than 10' deep.
The best day was on Mon 4/29 my wife and I boated 16KOK also brother and his wife caught 16 kok.
Last 2 days, fish was slow we caught only 9 Kok and they caught 8.
We caught many Kok with lighter colored meat.
It was cold and windy while we camped there but we really had a good time. The place is so pretty and peaceful. Some other morning the weather so calm and it was so beautiful. We gave them some fish to take home.

How do you run long lines with no weight and get your gear under? I’ve been trying but mine always surface and splash. I don’t run Kokabow though and have heard they are heavy enough to stay under. Do I need to let more line out?

G3 and Jagger, just got to keep at it and try different things. I have been helped on a few things that I think lead to better #s from Kokabow pro staff and good info from Chris at Kokanee Tackle. We fished last Sunday and landed another 19 by 1. I was fishing at daylight (6:20) and was the only boat in the water. Had the first 7 fish by 7:30 then other boats started to show up but it was slower. Was trolling at 1.3 most the early morning with little success then sped up to 1.6-1.7 and started picking up fish during turns on my outside poles so presumably they were going faster. Don’t doubt the pics I know several guys that will go out and fill limits all the time while I’m out the same day and have half the success. Hope this helps.

1.3-1.5 mph works best for me. When the wind picks up don't throw in the towel. Go up wind and fish back with the wind pushing you using a drift sock or 5 gallon bucket whatever. The heavy gusts and sudden speed change can bring on a savage bite after most people called it a day. It's almost comical to me to watch everyone leave when the fish are still biting good.

A little late but we caught 18 kokanee and 1 trout on Saturday with 6 rods. We were not able to get up there and fish till 9:30 am and didn't get off the water till 10:00 pm. We fished flashers with squids and pop gear with squids and spinners. Tried long lining it with dodgers but my dodgers must not be heavy enough by themselves since they kept coming to the surface.

Isecond the notion of the go to setups. I have my favorites for all the places I fish. Don’t ever use a green/black WR on arrowrock at first light though... ;-)
My go to speed is 1.3 with s turns to start every day. Try to keep track of what the boat was doing when one of my outsid poles gets hit. If I get two on the outside of the turn then I speed up and vice versa on multiple hits on the inside of the turn. Once that happens I bump the speed a quarter mph and resume. You can dial in the preferred speed pretty quick in my opinion. When I get desperate I will start to stop the boat and lurch forward or just to speed bursts to try to get a bite. I have a buddy who swears by 2mph...I can’t bring myself to hot rod my boat like that...lol!
As for the one guy catching more than everybody else...I used to always feel I was boating more than the other boats. Maybe it was beginners luck though. I would fish lures right behind the downrigger ball and slam the fish. After several years of slaying the fish I upgraded the pump on my boat and went on a few years long dry spell where I was average at best. Finally started catching fish again with 40’+ of leader behind the downrigger as well as 200’ of line out on my long line poles. I got so desperate that I thought I would try some of that gypsy magic they call the black box. Tested my boat and I was putting off 1.5-2 volts out on my downrigger cables with the boat not even running.... First trip out with the thing I outfished the other boats on deadwood about 4:1 with two little kids reeling in the fish and we were all fishing the same schools. You don’t need to buy a black box because a volt meter will test the boat. Easy test and saves money on the black box if you don’t need it. If you put out 0.6 volts or less, it’s not the boat...LOL!
Getting back out on the water again soon after some more upgrades. Can’t wait to test the new downriggers, lowrance, and tr-1!

I run a 14' aluminum boat and mainly use my electric trolling motor, its just much quieter and easier then my old 25hp. I will installing the box this week and we will see how it goes.

Black box - voodoo - I commercial salmon trolled in Alaska for 7 years - know all about the black box - Originated in Canada - theory is a very small amount of voltage put into your lines will attract salmon - problem is that you have to have the whole boat isolated with zero volt leakage from motor, boat itself, and isolated down riggers as your boat alone sends out a voltage field that will interfer with the line voltage. If this is what your talking about it was never proven to work consistantly - your electric troll motor will make it unusable as that pust a mass of voltage in the field - good luck

TR-1= Best money ever spent for me. Really allows me to enjoy the fishing and maximize the interaction with guests on my boat while preventing things like boat spinning when multiple hookups. Even more valuable when trying to keep 4 downriggers fishing when the catching is good.

TR-1 would be nice but prob not in my future! I agree with a lot of the bite producing tips but would suggest for fisherman curteousy don’t be the boat yanking s turns when there’s 50 boats in the bay! I vary speeds, if I get a ghost strike I will click it in neutral than speed back up and about 50% of the time I will get a follow on bite. Color changes if I go more than 30 minutes without a hit, or drink another 🍺. Always scented bait, synthetic maggots or died corn. I don’t do s turns unless I’m the only boat around or if I mark fish that aren’t biting and I keep the turns very short but sharp just to vary the gear depths and speeds. Looks like the weather will play ball on Saturday, tight lines. Last comment, everybody loves a good youtube tutorial but I’ve seen many great fisheries ruined by hunting and fishing articles or special attention being brought to them so please post away but recognize that there can be negative consequences.

Garmin no longer makes the TR1. They have switched to a new auto pilot that runs on electric motors rather than hydraulics and interfaces with the chartplotter rather than a compass. I've got a TR1 - love it. Worth every penny.
Also, went to braid for the downriggers so the voltage thing is moot. Can't believe how much nicer the braid is over the cable. Quiet, no splicing, no kinks, no wire slivers in my fingers, and much smoother.

Go test the boat with a $20 volt meter before installing. You may not need the black box. If you are catching fish on par with everyone else, you are probably ok. It’s not going to make you catch fish but it could limit the problem of scaring fish away from the boat before they see your gear. I changed up the boat and then I couldn’t catch a cold!!!
You can always go away from stainless steel cable and negate the issue with the downrigger cables. If the boat is a problem without the downriggers in the water, then you are stuck with needing the box if you want to fix it. Whatever you do, you will need to test it, in all conditions. Adding a kicker motor/trolling motor in the water could change the voltage. Downriggers in the water vs out of the water changes things too.
The current is not in the fishing line. It is either at the downrigger cables or at the boat. That’s what you are tying to fix. If I had a completely neutral boat I would be happy as a clam. I wouldn’t get too hung up on trying to get 0.56 volts in the cables...

Almost forgot...don’t get hung up on trying to isolate the downriggers from the boat or “leaking” voltage from a short in the boat. Nothing is isolated because the boat is in the water and the downriggers are in the same water. Nothing is isolated. Even if your boat isn’t leaking voltage, the current will come from galvanic corrosion. I’ll spare you the science, but in short, aluminum, stainless steel, and zinc anode protection on boat motors/pumps create current between themselves through a process known as galvanic corrosion. That is most likely where the voltage is going to come from.

Very true.... And it doesn't matter if you have a aluminum or glass hull. You can switch from Stainless cable to synthetic braid....It will stop that current issue. Some guys swear that that little bit of voltage actually helps getting fish some way. You can check the current with a DC Volt meter.... One lead to the ground on the boat (or negative battery terminal) and the other to the stainless cable. Just send the ball down to 10 feet or so for the test..... .5 to .7 volts is about what you should read. If you read much more voltage than that you probably have a leak. If you are in salt water, the voltage may be higher since salt water will conduct the electricity a bit better. When you use your down rigger you are essentially making a large battery.

This is some great info everyone, I haven't installed it yet. Before I do install I will run the volt meter on my next run and see what kind of reading I get. My wiring is pretty good and downrigger is not electric, so I'm thinking I'm not going to have an issue there. So it may be about a week before I can hit the water with this weather, I hope it blows over sooner.

It will be interesting to see what you find. Just remember there are several paths for a leak to occur. After you do the initial test, retest with your electric trolling motor down in the water (both with the trolling motor on and off). Also check with your main motor in and out of the water (with it off and running). And finally, if you have an isolation switch on the electrical system (a master on/off switch), check for voltage with the switch both on and off. Lots of different paths to create an electric field around your boat while in the water. Let us know what you find.

We fished Friday from 430 to 9 and got 10 despite the howling wind and waves. I'm sure we would've got more but the conditions were not great. Saturday we fished from 630am the 730 pm. Curlew down to the fall creek. The majority of the fish were caught between lime creek and the powerlines. All fish were between the surface and 15ft. Pink was the color all day and orange was hot in the afternoon. We ended up with 39 for the day and probably lost a dozen or more. Most fish were in the 14-15" range with three fattys at 17". Very few boats on the water and an absolutely beautiful day!

Fished from about 9-3 today trying out all the new toys. Windy and raining cats and dogs. Spent about an hour at fall creek first thing with no luck and ridiculous wind. Jumped up and spent the rest of the day between curlew and lime. 10 kokes and one chinook in the boat. Probably lost half again more. Pink Houche and sling blade was the hot ticket for the day. Had a couple hits on other things, but one rod caught almost everything. Didn’t have a matching set so I got as close as I could and then the other pole started producing.

My wife and I, along with another couple, fished Anderson on the mornings of 5/23 and 5/24. We spent most of our time off of the Pine launch area. We caught 24 kokes on 5/23, and 11 kokes and 1 trout on 5/24. We fished between 5 and 15 feet deep, with most caught around 10' (2 colors lead core). Pink hoochies, and pink and silver bead spinners, with dodgers or flashers, worked well along with plain shoepeg corn. The kokes were really nice fish, and up to about 17". Water temp 53 deg.

It's been awhile since my last trip, been trying to get the boys on some pan fish witih little luck so I decided it was time to hit the kokes again. Fished today 5/25 from 12-4. Launched out of curlew. Took 18 home, released 4 I think and lost another 6 or so. Largest fish was 18'' with the average 15.5''. All nice fish. They were aggressive and hit the rods hard. Lots of acrobats today. Most fish were hooked bad and I had a hard time removing the hooks. Pink seemed to be the color of choice, although idk if it would've mattered. The fishing was so good even the birds were catching kokanee. I actually thought we would have a bird of prey on the line for a second. As my sons fish surfaced 30' out the bird began to try and catch it. The fish popped off and didn't make it far before being snatched up. The boys were pretty excited. All fish were caught 15' and less. I did mark a bunch of fish in that 65-80 range, but didn't even bother. It rained pretty good a few times, but we managed to stay mostly dry under the bimini. All in all, it was a good trip.

Fished 5/26-5/27
Saturday boated 50 between the storms pink was definitely the color of choice although there where some of ball lures that were producing. Fish were on the surface to 8’ on the DR. Sunday boated 26 by from 6:30 - 12:30. I had lost so many set ups from slightly abraided line that we were digging at the bottom of the box. I have been re tying set ups with 10lb maxima ultra green but am thinking that I need to up the leader weight to at least 16. I lost 7 set ups from sat and Sunday and was checking for abrasions every fish. Very frustrating and expensive. Sunday was still pink. Best fish was 19” with at least 15 18” and the rest 16 we threw back anything under 14

Fished from 3:30-7:00. Boated 12. Lost 4. 13.5'' - 18''. Caught from the surface to 60'. Also caught one chinook at 92'. Pink was still the color and the bite was off at 6. Only landed 1 koke and 1 chinook from 6-7. Another good quick trip.

Mike, the chinook was only 12". This is my first year fishing Anderson. Are there large chinooks to target? How big do they get in a lake? Thanks.
I fished Anderson today from 1130-230. Boated 5, lost 4 Was a slow day for me. Still at the surface despite the 64 degree surface temp.

I had my dog running around last weekend with no issues, but he didn't get to far off the beach and boat. Any thoughts on how this cold front moving in will affect the fishing ? Barometer takes off to the upside starting Friday morning (29.5 > +30 by Sunday).

I've never worried about that barometer crap. I've had some of my best fishing in the pouring rain, wind, lightning, etc... if the fish are biting, they're biting. Just my 2 cents.

Fished from about 8:30am 'til 1:00pm. Pretty day, had hoped for better fishing. Landed 4 kokanee (15 to 17 inches) lost 1.
3 were caught on a long line probably not over 10 feet deep, pulling a Cousin Carl Moon Glow flasher and white hoochie.
The other was caught at about 25 feet on a white Arrow Flash with a white hoochie. No luck on other colors.
All were caught between Curlew and Lime creek.
Good to get out!!!

Hit Anderson Ranch Monday and tuesday. Monday was slow. Caught 3 in about 6 hours of fishing. Lost the same. One big one right at the boat. Couldnt figure out what they wanted. Could not get them to hit anything pink or white. Finally got them to hit a green squid. Tied some more that night and Tuesday was better. Fished for 4 hours in them morning and got 5 in the boat. Two of them were 19". Had two that were 14 that i dont know how long we drug around. The poles weren't even moving on the DR. After a half hour of nothing we reeled in to swap and there were fish on them. It was the hottest first thing in the am and then slowed after that. Used Kokabow dodgers. Watermelon and one that was yellow and orange. Also used a Christensen tackle green/silver dodger. Green squids with various colors of blades. Bloody Tuna and Kokanee special on gulp maggots. Kids had a great time. My wife has to remind me that we cant fish from 6 am til 10 Pm with the young kids... I am sure we would have caught more if we were out longer. Good luck to everyone out there!

Fished yesterday from 10:00Am 'til 4:00PM, boated 10 good size & fat kok and lost about 8 fish, release 1 little kok. None rainbow or Chinook. Fished from Curlew to Wood creek. That was a beautiful day until the wind came up in the afternoon. Fish from 5' to 25' with DR. Long line pole about 75' line out 1.1/2 oz sinker Kokabow dodger + green squid, pink squid was good too.'
Temporary patched the gimbal bellow (seal) and no more water leak into the boat. I often raised the stern drive fully up when trolling. Some how in early Spring the driftwood stick get into the area and punctured a hole on the bellow when lowering the unit. Last Monday I took the boat to LP and that took me about 20 minutes to find the leak area. At home when I look all the bellows that could cause the leak and found the puncture on gimball bellow. I patched with bicycle cement and rubber patch and it works for now. I'll order the Mercruiser bellow kit and replaced in coming Fall. That will be a painfully job :)

Took dad out yesterday. We fished from 630am-5pm. We caught fish from curlew down to the powerlines. Pink variants were the only thing working for us at 25ft deep. Pretty steady but slow bite all day. We ended up with 14 and lost probably twice that many. For some reason the fish just would not stay on the line. I lost 10 in a row before we got one in the boat! We did our best catching with the afternoon wind pushing us from the powerlines back to lime creek. Busy day on the water but overall a great day to spend with dad.

Fished yesterday evening 6/15 for almost 4 hours. Nothing for the first 1.5 hours. Then landed 1 on orange and nothing for almost another hour. Finally switched to green as mentioned above and had a steady bite in the 20-30' range. Ended up with 9 in the cooler and lost 3 or 4. Everything in the 13-15" range. I think these are a different age class of fish that we have been catching. A little smaller and almost half had the ligher colored meat. Another success at Anderson

Anderson was fairly good to me today. Fished from 7:30 am to 3:30pm, started off with green no bites at all, switched to pink hoochie with a watermelon dodger at 20ft, from 10:00 to 10:30 landed 4 nice 14 to 15 inch Kokes. Nothing again until about noon and then one 18' and one 16". Only lost one small one at the boat.

I have only launched from curlew one time, no complaints. It did cost 5 bucks for parking/day use though. Every other time i have launched by the dam/elk creek. It gets crazy there, and parking is limited which forces people to park on the dirt road.
The dam would probably save you 30-40 minutes of driving. I have been going mid afternoon and have avoided most of the boat launch rush and have still done well with the kokes. Hope this helps. Good luck

Fished from 7am-6pm. We caught 21 and lost a handful. All in all pretty slow day for us. A random fish here and there all day. Orange was the winner with pink close second. 20-40 ft on downrigger and longline had best action with 2oz weight and 70ft line out. Caught fish from curlew all the way to the snowman and back. Beautiful day on the water and not too many boats surprisingly.

My wife and I fished Anderson Ranch this morning from 0730 to 1200. Lots and lots of boats and very little fish seen caught. We didn't boat any Kokes....out of 30 or so boats we saw less than half a dozen boated. Tried everything in the tackle box and fished from 60 feet on the DR to 10 feet on a longline. Was an off day I suppose. At least the weather was awesome. Will try Arrowrock on Thursday.

We had the same experience on Sunday .. Fished 7:30 to noon (when the wind blew us off the lake). Hooked one Koke at 50 feet .... and lost it 20 before the boat ... hooked on a silver and blue dodger with a pink wedding ring trailing. Saw only one fished boated from the 25+ boats on the water from Curlew down towards the power lines. Fished in the AM at 15 feet and tried every depth down to 55 feet when we gave up. Long ways to go to get skunked..... could of done that at Lucky Peak .

Sorry to hear the results from Pauli and Conservationist. I've been there - those days when the Kokanee win. I was there on Tuesday as well. Took a friend. It was his first Kokanee fishing trip. We had a pretty good day. Started at 8:30, stopped at 2pm. Brought home 18 nice-sized Kokes, most in the 16" - 17" range. Biggest was 17 1/2" so we didn't have any monsters, but they were certainly big enough and solid (most had the 'normal' color meat, but definitely had quite a few with the light orange meat). And only caught Kokes; no trout or Chinooks caught. Started at Curlew, fished across to Lyme Creek, then down the narrows a bit and then back to Curlew. We were catching fish all along the way, but they were mainly hitting in the area just beyond the brick retaining walls and before the Lyme Cr bay area. Had the downrigger set at 41' and caught 5 or 6 at that depth. Then long-lined (100 clicks out) with a couple poles using 1, 2, 3, and 4 oz weights. 1 and 4 oz had the most hits, but it seemed like we were catching fish between 10' and 40'. So we never locked into one depth in particular. Used pink and watermelon dodgers with pink hoochies and a ford fender with an orange spinner. Pretty well split on number of Kokes caught on each setup. Other colors were not working for us. What was working for us was our landing ratio to number of bites. After 4 hours, we had 16 bites and 16 fish landed (released 1 small one). Don't think I've ever landed 16 in a row before. Especially with a newbie in the boat. He handled the net superbly! Then we finally lost 2 and then landed a few more. By the time we stopped, we had 21 bites total, with 19 fish landed and 18 kept. Not a ton of bites, but we sure made the most of it. Again, a good day.
On top of this, another friend of mine was there at the same time in his boat (with a buddy). They had a ton more bites (50+), managing to land 15 Kokes. Released one 17" Chinook. They were long-lining using 2 oz weights with pink dodgers and hoochies.
The ups and downs of Kokanee fishing. Crazy but still addicting and fun no matter what!

I would like to reiterate basically everything kokaneekevin had to say. We fish yesterday(thur) from 10am-8pm and ended up with 19. Then we fished today from 7am-12:30 and caught 18. A hot bite this am. We caught 7 fish in 30 minutes then it died way off. We caught fish from 20-55ft but most were in the 30-40ft range. Orange was best color today and black/white yesterday. Two highlights of the trip were this am we had all four poles go off and landed all of them. I also caught a nice koke with two hooks and 6 inches of leader in his mouth in the same area I had one break me off earlier. Almost certain it was the same fish. Revenge is SWEET! We did catch a few fish that were starting to turn already. All in all a great trip with beautiful weather and few wake boats.

Hey Uncle Lucas...
What are you guys doing with these large takes of fish. Do you freeze then?....maybe use a seal-a-meal?? I hear that some guys will can them...but I know nothing about that. You could smoke a load of them....but do they go into the freezer after they come out of the smoker? Some guys put the fish (or filets) in a tupperware filled with water and freeze the whole thing in a block of ice. How long will they stay good in the freezer??? Just curious.

You did better than us. We took home 7 Kok all orange meat with 2 of them are 18". Started to fish from 9:00am we caught 4 fish less than 50 minutes in Curlew, after 10:00 that they shutdown. We ran up to Fall creek and fish in varied depth we lost all 7 of them @ 45'. Later we came back to Lime creek and caught 3 more. Lure set up same as your.

We fished from 7am-5pm launching from the dam for a change. Had some bites and caught one near the snowman in the am. The bite picked up mid day in the large bay between powerlines and the narrows. We managed to keep 17 and threw back 6 or so in the 12" range. Nice average fish but no hogs. Pink and green were best performers at 30ft on the downrigger and longline with 2 oz weight and 88 ft out was good too.

Pink squid with dodger from DR 30 - 40' , long line pole 1.5 oz sinker + Forfender+ Kokabow Talon 100' line out (caught 2 on this pole). Will have friends come over for Kok BBQ tonight.

We fished from 7 am to 430 pm launching at curlew. Started at the upper end and fished down to powerlines and back. We managed 18 kokes, 1 trout, and 1 smallmouth bass. 35 -40 ft on downrigger and longline with 3 oz weight and 55 ft out were both good. Green, orange and pink were all good at times but we never really settled on any one color. A great day on the lake with dad all in all. The fish are really starting to turn now.!

Hey uncle lucas
Good job, I am fairly new to this Kok fishing, was there on the 18th, trolled 14 hours for 5 fish, could not see any on the finder, tried everything, pulled at 30 to 40 on the DR but super slow, was doing everything you were but very few fish, could you tell us newbies what length of line you use between the dodger and the squid and what speed you go ??? and anything else you would be willing to share with us greenhorns
Thanks, Greg

Try adjusting the settings on your finder. It took me quite a while to figure mine out and if the setting aren't just right I won't see anything either. As far as leader length, some of mine are shorter and some longer 12-24 inches. It depends on the day. Most people use shoepeg corn with some sort of scent or plain works too. The sweet speed for me is always 1.3-1.5 mph. If you see a particular boat catching try talking to them. Most people are approachable and willing to help. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I have the finder set at 83 mhz which is where it has to be to see the elongated air bladders and the depth scale set at 100 feet and all summer long they have been showing up just fine until the 2nd week of July and then they started to disappear, I assumed they were getting fished out, could you tell me , that is if you know, as the season progresses and the fish get closer to spawning do they get more aggressive, I was wondering if as they get closer to spawn do we run shorter and shorter leaders making the lure more aggressive verses shorter lazy leaders, one boat on the lake told me that and other boats said no dont do that so just trying to see what direction i should go this time of year to entice a bite.
Thanks / Greg

I really don't have an answer for the leader length/time of year. I will say this year seems to have been off for me and seems like many others. It's been an inconsistent bite with preferred colors changing several times in one day. We marked fish all day on Saturday throughout the entire lake. I will fish a particular lure for maybe 30 mins and if no bites, change. Usually we can find something they like and many times it's just ONE lure combo. Hope this helps.

Flew in from WA state to check out the tournament with my son and family who live in the area. It was a great time even though we had a hard time boating some fish. Managed to weigh in with only five(picture is just from prior evening). Everyone attending was friendly and definitely something to look forward to again! Thank you Idaho Backcountry Vets for hosting along with all the sponsors and boaters helping raise money for a great cause!

Hey, Conservationist, that was me (KokaneeKevin) and my fishing buddy you ran into on Tues. I'll be sure to say Hi next time. :) I told you 9, but we actually ended up with 10 Kokes in the boat (forgot about the last one just before we headed in). All were between 16" and 18", and fat. Very nice! I had one (a personal best) at 18 1/2". Most had some red, but we had several that were all silver. It was a bit of a slow day, especially late morning. We started around 7:30, ended at 2pm. Started just off the Curlew ramp and caught 2 nice ones before 8am. Thought we were in for a big day. Then nothing for the next couple of hours, except for a couple of hit-and-runs. By Noon, we headed to Lime Creek and caught one there. Then we headed into the narrows and things finally started picking up. Caught the rest of our Kokes there (kind of the northern end of the narrows). We fished with 3 lines, one on a downrigger set between 40' and 50'. Two long lines, one with 4oz and one with 5oz weights. Although we mixed it up and fished between 20' and 70', all fish were caught between 40' and 50'. The rainbow dodger and pick hoochie was the best combo, but also caught several on ford fenders with an orange spinner on one and a pink hoochie on the other. We probably had a total of 20 hits. Lost 2 due to lines breaking (very unusual for us) and lost another one at the boat when it threw the hook at the last moment, just escaping the net. All in all, another great (and hot!) day at Anderson Ranch.

I'm heading to Anderson to spend a few days there this weekend. Anybody got any info on depth, colors, and speed.. I will spend 1 whole day just trying to target chinook. I have some brads, flatfish, and double jointed rapala's I will try at around 2.3 to 2.5 mph at various depths.

I've found the Brad's mini cut plug in black and stuffed with oil packed tuna to be a winner. Good luck, and give us a report. Mike

Solo fishing at Anderson Ranch today from 9:30AM ~ 4:30PM. There were few boats on the lake and I didn't see any action, fishing was slow. 1st fish caught was a 17" Chinook on the DR at 20' then I caught the other one about same size that I released both. Later I fish from 50' to 60 and caught 6 Kokanee. 2 - 17" male Kok really red and the other 4 were silver ( from 12" - 15").
Kokabow dodger + talon squid spinner caught most the fish. Pink and orange color worked for me.
DR 50' to 60', 1.5MPH
There were many RV's already camped at Curlew sand beach. Look like people leave their RVs and boats in that area to save a camping spot for the Labor Day Holliday:)

Fished Saturday and Sunday. Tried 1/2 day for Kokes and didn't get a bite. Had one downrigger with stackers set for 20 and 40 and the other 30 and 50. Not a hit. Switched over to setup for Chinook and caught 1 15" and had two more hit but didn't hook up. Next day went after Chinook only. Caught a decent 17 to 18" and had two more hit and missed. I'm finally getting into the swing of finding them. I tried herring first day and had one hit but nothing else. Caught 1 on a Brad and the other on a blue Scatter Rap double jointed. Trolled 120 - 130ft at 2.1 to 2.3 mph.
I definitely need to get some heavier downrigger balls so I'm not 10feet behind the boat. :)

My wife and I headed up to Anderson Ranch yesterday (Sunday), hoping to take advantage of the last hot day of the summer. Hot but not too hot. :) Quite a few campers along the beach at Curlew but hardly any with fishing boats. Definitely more ski boats, wake-boarders, and jet-skiers than fishing boats. But they mostly did not interfere with the fishing. Only saw a few other boats actually fishing.
We fished from 10:30am to 3pm. Started out from the Curlew ramp and fished from there to Lime Cr, then down a ways through the narrows. Used various combinations but mostly used a Ford Fender with chartreuse spinner and a couple different dodgers with hoochies. In 2 hours, had only 1 bite, catching a small Chinook (at 45'). Marked fish at various depths from mid-teens to below a 100'. Fished all around those depths with no luck. Finally decided we needed a change of scenery so we motored down to Fall Cr. Started fishing the entrance to Fall Cr, (kinda that outside edge before actually entering the inlet). Within minutes had our first hit but no hookup. A couple minutes later, hooked up and had our first Kokanee in the boat. A nice 14-incher. During the next hour and a half, we had another 9 bites. Unfortunately we lost 6 of those, most of them on for a few seconds before throwing the hook. Did lose one of them at the boat (my bad on the poor netting attempt; DOH!). Did end up with 4 nice Kokes in the boat, all 13"-14". Most hits were on a pole we were long-lining (with 3oz weight) with the Ford fender and chartreuse spinner, probably at a depth around 35'. Downrigger line at 45' had quite a few hits too. It had a rainbow dodger with pink hoochie. So it seemed the 35' to 45' depth was the hot ticket. As always, another great day at Anderson.

Thanks for the report Kevin! Ford Fenders, trolling weights and lead core all suffer the same fate of high loss numbers due to the inability to keep the fish fighting the rod and reel drag instead of the gear. Sounds like your persistence paid off! Appreciate your post!

I still use weight, blades, and a spinner much of the time. Putting a snubber between the troll and the spinner has helped me keep more fish on the line. Although I do have a downrigger, I like to move my rod forward and backward to induce a bite. The change in motion is frequently productive. I don't know how to do that with a downrigger, so I still longline a lot with with the weight, etc. I admit the fish isn't as much fun to bring in, but I think I get more hits by giving the lure a change in speed.

Welcome !
As nice as it is it would be a great trip no matter if not!
The fish will be scattered and at various depths, but you can catch them at this time of year if you are prepared for the weather.
A few years back a friend and I fished Anderson at least once every month thru the year. We caught fish every time we went. Some times not to many but some. Good luck!
