    Best tasting freshwater fish

I am a "poor Southerner" and have caught and eaten plenty of home grown Kokanee down here in NC. I do not think Kokanee are the best tasting fresh water fish. I would take a walleye, yellow perch, resident brook or rainbow trout(not hatchery) or black crappie caught in our clear deep mountain...

    Nantahala 2014

The Kokanee are still biting at Nantahala but the size of the fish are small. The last 3 I caught were in the 8" to 10" range. Two of them did not even trip the line release clips and were discovered when I cranked up to change lures or charge the glow on the lures(squids) . All fish were...

NC Kokanee Salmon Record Broken Again

Nantahala Lake, a 1,065-acre reservoir in Clay and Macon counties, has spawned two state records for kokanee salmon in less than a week. On June 6, Fred Mix, of Rainbow Springs, broke the existing record of 3 pounds, 9 ounces, held since 2009 by Ashley Swann, of Swannanoa, after reeling in a...

    Nantahala 2014

Mark Tried to PM you but got an error message saying your mailbox had reached capacity. I will try to get out tomorrow and bring the koke and trout heads I have. Will you be fishing from Rocky Branch to the dam? My wife bought that fish pin bone remover from Amazon. They have 4 or 5 online...

    Nantahala 2014

Trio of Kokanee Went out for my weekly Kokanee hunt and boated these three. Took a while to find the fish as there was nothing to be found where I caught some last week and the kokes did not leave a forwarding address. Take a look at the tool in the lower left hand side of the picture. It...

    Nantahala 2014

Mixed Bag Got out for a couple of hours this morning and fished until the weather got ugly(wind and a popcorn thunderstorm) that sent me home early. Caught one Kokanee(16") and a decent sized Rainbow trout(20").

    Nantahala 2014

2 Nice Dixie Kokes Still waiting for parts for my outboard but I could no longer resist. Went out with just my electric trolling motor and 2 batteries. Had a decent day until the pestilent wind picked up and chased me in. Did catch 2 nice Kokes at 17" and 18". The big male weighed about...

    Nantahala 2014

I have not been out in weeksbandmyhead. I am waiting on a starter relay(everything comes in by stage coach up here) for my boat engine plus the crazy weather at the lake is no help. Hope to get back on the lake this week.

    Nantahala 2014

Mark Nice Brown. I have to get used to fishing those "moving lakes" of western NC. Launching and recovering a boat is becoming a real pain for this old goat but I am going to try and make there effort. The Kokanee were up to their usual tricks. They were not to found where one would expect...

    Nantahala 2014

After a long delay I finally got out on Nantahala Lake to target the Kokanee. Had a fairly decent day. Boated a nice 18" male. Lost another a tad smaller at the net. Had a number of strikes. They were biting light. All the action was at the "narrows" and green was the color of choice. ...

Newbie from CT in a Kayak

Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear CT has stopped stocking Kokanee in the state. Looks like Nantahala Lake in the mountains of NC with it's naturally reproducing kokanee population is soon going to be the only place to catch a kokanee in the East.

    Braided Downrigger Line

The steel cable on one of my downriggers is reaching the end of it's useful life. I was thinking of replacing the steel cable with braided line. Do any of the members have experience with the braided line. Any pros or cons would be most appreciated.

    What a Fisherman!

This is truly an incredible video. Hard to believe this Osprey got 5-6 fish at a time and then got a flounder under 3 feet of water and made off with what looks to be a 5+ lbs. steelhead. Have you ever seen a bird shake water off like a dog does?!!! Wouldn't want to get in its way when...

    Nantahala Salmon

First decent weather day in weeks up here. Went out this morning and not even a strike, just a small bass on the long line. Could not find any schools, just individual arches 45' to 75+' and they were far and few between. Same thing happened last year. Did mark some decent sized bait balls...

    Huge Kokanee back east

Naturally reproducing 16" to 20" kokanee are common in Nantahala lake. There is also a decent population of naturally reproducing rainbow trout as well. There is relatively light fishing pressure for the kokes and trout as most anglers target the decent sized large and smallmouth bass that...

    Banner Day At Nantahala Lake

Life is Good Got off to a late start. Heavy lake fog did not burn off till about 10 am. Then I could find the kokes. Finally I nailed one. Had it for dinner. The kokes are definitely going deeper. Life is Good!
