    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

Yes, that boat is a step up from mine. It's a bit longer and has split seats compared to my bench seats. My motor would fit, but I think a 40hp would probably work a little better.

Anchoring, Sturgeon Fishing, Boat Launching and Bikini Watching

I guess I'm not clear on how the "puller" mechanism works and am surprised it can work in deep water. Doesn't the mechanism "walk" the float down the line towards the anchor? Does it stop "walking" when the line gets close to vertical?

    Another boat questions

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately too. I did ride in a 16ft boat with a 50hp prop drive. It was underpowered. If you look at a boat to buy, check the Coast Guard tag attached to the hull...usually a metal one attached with rivets. It will tell you the maximum hp you can put on...

Anchoring, Sturgeon Fishing, Boat Launching and Bikini Watching

I started watching this video because I was interested in learning about the Columbia River Anchoring System. There's a lot of good info here, and the bikinis make the commercial part seem pleasant. If you want to know how to fish on a river, there's a lot of good info here...

Need coaching on another boat selection

OK...I drove a couple hours to look at a 16 ft. boat. The brand name of the boat will not be revealed because I don't want to insult anyone here or their boat. But I can tell you, I learned a lot. I got to use the boat on the water, which showed me that a 50hp 4-stroke was marginal on a boat...

Need coaching on another boat selection

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm finding that boats tend to be region-specific, with some of the best ones coming out of the North West. I hadn't heard of a couple of the brands you mentioned.

Need coaching on another boat selection

Ha! The Titanic sunk because the ice berg tore off some of the rivets on the side plates, allowing water to come in. I won't be naming any boat I buy "Titanic".

Need coaching on another boat selection

Hmmm....it looks like no matter what size boat one gets below aircraft carrier size, fishing 4 people is pretty tough. I've learned a lot from you guys already on this one...thanks! It has also expanded the width of my fishing net (!) to include some brands of boat that I hadn't thought of...

    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

Thanks, SB...I had looked at that website, but didn't see the "double-riveted" spec. It looks like Smoker Craft and Star Craft have similar construction. Hey..I just made 600 posts! I didn't think I had it in me...

    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

I hadn't heard that trailering can cause rivet leaks. Would this come from running over bumpy roads without tie-down straps, or over-inflated tires that cause a lot of bouncing?

Need coaching on another boat selection

Hi Guys, I've recently arrived at the conclusion that my boat is almost too small for 2 people, and I'd sometimes like to fish with 3 or 4. I'm looking at older boats, thinking that there might be some jewels out there that could work with some rework. Currently, I'm looking at Star Craft and...

    C'mon Carp!

Yeah...it's about time someone found a good use for carp. I know some cultures see carp as a great delicacy, but I haven't had that experience.

    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

That's good to know. I guess I had a strong preference for welded boats after owning mine and seeing the leaks my friends had in their admittedly "cheaper" riveted aluminum boats. Are Starcraft boats similar to Smokers in construction? Do they have the "double" rivet construction like the...

    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

That's good to hear. I have friends who have owned riveted 12-15 ft boats before and they had continuous trouble with leaks, often having to re-set the rivets to slow the leaks down. Silver Bullets...what is the beam of the 16ft. Smoker Alaskan you have? Thanks!

    Smoker Craft...are they welded?

I've been looking at ads for Smoker Craft. Are they all riveted or welded? Seems like a quality boat. My Gregor is welded and doesn't leak a drop (knock on wood). You Smoker Guys...do they leak?

    lead core in ca ??

It's legal in CA. They sell it at sporting good stores & tackle shops. I hear of people using it all the time. I haven't used it as I use downriggers.

Lake Berryessa 9-24-10 - The Vampires are giving up!

Way to go, HiTech...you really seem to have the fishing methods dialed in. I was disappointed in my performance this year on the koke fishing. My first season was better. This year I seemed to fish at the wrong time when the bite was off and wasn't able to go fishing when the bite was hot.

Kokanee fishing update for Port Angeles, WA

Thanks for that, Captain Pete. I just tried jigging here in CA last month with no results. I'm wondering what I am doing wrong. The main thing I'm having problems with (I think) is keeping the boat stationary for vertical jigging. I find that if there is any wind at all, my line can be at an...
