    Lead core or riggers?

I like using lead core early in the season, especially here in Colorado. Blue Mesa kokes are only 15 to 20 feet deep going into June and it seems like a waste to use the downriggers at such shallow depths. Sometimes I will run one lead core rod straight out of the back of the boat even in...

    Kokanee Rods

I like the medium light 7'6" Ugly Stik rods. They are extremely durable and I have found that I need 10 or 15 rods and they are very affordable. I am waiting to see the new JJ rods that come out this year from Lamiglas and will probably buy at a couple of them.

    Vallecito back this year?

I have heard the population is making a healthy comeback. The DOW plans on stocking another 400,000 fingerlings this April and hope for a 10 to 15% survival rate. It is looking better and better each year.

    An Apex Rigging Alternative...

Do you use a long leader of 24 to 30 inches behind the dodger when running these like you would an Apex?

    An Apex Rigging Alternative...

Could you post some pictures if you have some already put together? I would think anything that heavy would alter the action of the apex, but that could be a good thing.

    Dodgers , What do like?

We have run the same type of set-up using a 2 -3 foot set back behind the ball troll, but without the dodger. This reduces the drag on the line and allows for a better fight with the fish. It seems to work especially well early in the season.

I have never used shuttlehawks, but it seems to me that if you attached your first pole to the cannonball and attached the shuttlehawk stopper just a few feet above the cannonball, they would constantly get tangled unless the lead on the second pole was only a foot or two. I run the second pole...

    Dodgers , What do like?

I have a wide variety of colors and designs and use mostly RMT and Luhr-Jensen dodgers. I started using Fish With Gary (FWG) dodgers this summer and had great success with them. They are quite a bit different from anything I have seen anyone use before and I think that is why they worked so...

    Trolling Motors...

The Yamaha high-thrust T8's are great motors. I have several friends who have them and they work very well. None of them have had any mechanical issues with the motors because they take care of them. I have a Mercury 9.9, but have been wanting to update it to the Yamaha T8 because of the size...

    Colored Downrigger weights

I started out with black then switched to lime green for a few years until the coating wore off. I re-coated them with red for the last half of the season this year. The lime green worked better for me than the black or red. I am going to wait until July next summer to really see if there...

    U.V. Lures

Many of the koke fisherman I have fished with won't use anything but glow and uv lures. The catch rates are far greater in their experience using them than just plain lures. I switched over to using mostly uv lures and using Pro Cure's uv gel this year and had a great year.

I buy a two rod stamp in both Colorado and Utah. They are worth it running two downriggers because I can fish at 4 different depths to locate fish. It is only $10 to $15 more, so why not? Switching gears to shuttle hawks, I have never used one. 80% of the fish I catch are on the deeper rods...

If you had to choose 25 lures for a koke trip, what would you take?

I purchased some Wee-Tads this year and used them for the first time at Flaming Gorge. I put them on when nothing else was working and caught a few kokes within an hour on one trip. I also caught some rainbows and macks on them. I don't think many guys use them here, but I wanted to try...

    corn substitute?

I use Gulp maggots in pink and wax worms in natural color. I quit using corn at the end of the season in Colorado because it is messy and time consuming. I have never found a really good way to keep the corn on my hooks for long periods of time (apparently, I like to go hours and hours without...

    Downrigger Balls

I use 10 lb pancake weights. There is a little less swingback on those than the regualr ball weights, but still more than I would like. The shark weights may take care of the swingback issue better, but I am not willing to pay $90 for them.

    Depth Question

I like to fish from 1.3 to 1.8 mph using a 25 - 40 foot set-back most of the time. On several occasions this year, we graphed fish on the fish finder at a specific depth where the downrigger weight was and the fish hit the lure. It didn't seem like there was much more than a few inches, if...

    Downrigger cable or line?

My brother tried the braided line for one season and then went back to the wire. He was always afraid of dragging his balls on the bottom of the lake and losing one. He eventually lost one and then switched back to the wire line. We replace the anodes on our boats every year and check the...

How do I cram all this stuff into a tackle box?

I use the plastic boxes, as well, along with the soft-sided tackle bags. I prefer the larger ones because of the amount of lures that I have. I also group the different kinds of lures together like Kokaholic. It makes it much easier to have all of the same kind of lures in the same box. Some...

How do I cram all this stuff into a tackle box?

I have had similar problems, and still do to some extent. I have 4 tackle boxes right now and need at least one more. The problem is that I keep buying more stuff and that requires more space. The problem now is I need a bigger boat to haul all my tackle boxes laugh hyst
