What's In Store For Me At Lake Koocanusa?

That's awesome Jest! What part of the lake did you fish for Kamloops in? what part of the lake did you fish in general? I'm still trying to get in "tune" with the Kamloops up there. Fall from now until the ice forces you off the lake the rainbows just get better and better and they come to...

    Large mouth bass in Ashley

Pike, I have to say I agree with you. Bucket Biologists are in no way helping ANY fishery. But your statement about leaving the stocking to those who understand the big picture isn't really working either....Look at Flathead Lake for example or Canyon Ferry, both are in turmoil because of FWP...

What's In Store For Me At Lake Koocanusa?

jest, this time of year you can catch some Kokes, but the Rainbows are going to be a bit on the tough side. If you don't have downriggers you probably don't have much of a chance on getting the Kamloops. The best time for the BIG Rainbows on Koocanusa is starting in late October until the ice...

    The Big to Little Question....???

Sparky, I have had success with trolls and wedding rings, small apex in fire and ice, Kokanee red, and Kavorkian(this may also get you a Bull Trout or Kamloops). The reds and oranges seem to work best for me. When you come out of the Rexford Bench launch, head North around the first point on...

Gulp maggots and Pautzke Fire Corn

I use the Fire Corn, and when Corn is working(haven't found many times when it works better than maggots) it works better than shoe peg and way less hassle. I also use Mike's Kokanee Lotion even with bare hooks sometimes and it works!

    Memorial Day report

HAM, I fished the north end of whitefish for Pike on Monday with the kids, and my daughter got a nice 3.5lb Pike(good eater). That was the only nibble/hit all day and we never saw another fish caught and there were about 4 boats up there... Sorry you didn't get a single over the 3 days, but...

What type of rods and reels do you use?

I use 8' UL Diawa Spinmatic rods with Pflueger President UL spinning reels. They load up great on the downrigger and have great sensitivity and they are durable. Where I fish for Kokes there are BIG Bull Trout and I've had to battle an 8lb Bull I caught on one last year on 4lb test and after...

    Kokes on the surface

In my neck of the woods 25ft and shallower is where you catch Kokes all the time! I've set the rod down many times to reach out for the clip and turn back to the rod to see it just "thrumming" away...Fish On!!

    Hittin' Koocanusa on Sunday...

Well the water has warmed up about 4 degrees on top to a high of 42 that I saw yesterday. Only one anemic Koke all day and one little Kamloops Rainbow. Weather was much nicer than the Weather Guessers said it would be so that was great. The water has clouded up a great deal and the weather...

    Cabela's points

Only issue I've seen with them is when your fishing in below freezing temps in November and you go to put the boat back on the trailer after fishing for 6+ hours the buckles get frozen in the housing...couple strong pulls and they free right up...stomper

    Cabela's points

Ive had my Boat buckles for over a year now and I love them!!! Best 80 bucks I've ever spent!! Can't loose them. They tighten and stay tight. I think they hold the boat in place better than the old style. I've also never had one come loose from bouncing down a pot-hole filled dirt road!

    Hittin' Koocanusa on Sunday...

Tried the new gear and some old tried and true stuff for the kokes on Koocanusa and didn't even get a bite. Not seeing much in the way of schools on the fish finder either. Water is still pretty cold, highest I saw was 38degrees(topwater)... Did get 2 nice Bull Trout, one 9lbs 13oz and the...

    Kokanee slime and cracked hands

I have this same problem when fishing/catching lots of fish of any kind. I use Stokolan cream. I put it on once after a good day of fishing and my hands are good to go. Another thing that helps is making sure you dry your hands after handling the fish and rinsing your hands. Basically your...

    Hittin' Koocanusa on Sunday...

Two weekends ago I dug my boat out from behind a massive drift in my yard. I broke my snow blower in the process and had to move about 10 cu/yards of snow by hand... Then the floats were stuck on the lower two carbs on my Yamaha F100 so got that fixed and now I'm ready to hit the water!!!
