2017 Dworshak Reservoir Kokanee Fishing Report

We fished Dworshak for the first time this year last Thursday. We put 6 in the cooler, the biggest was 12" the others were 10". We made passes near the dam and Indian/Canyon creeks. Talked to a group who had landed 20 using 4 ounces of lead. The fish we caught were scattered between 20 and 60...

2017 Dworshak Reservoir Kokanee Fishing Report

Hi Ken and Barb. We haven't been there yet but Toby Wyatt in his recent newsletter said that he caught a limit of 25 between 10 and 13 inches long. His letter had a picture and they looked nice and fat! He didn't include any details. John

Rick, we were at Grandad 2-1/2 weeks ago. We caught lots of fish and they were not turning red but that could be changing now. Let us know how you do. John

Whoa, ricks, those are decent kokes! Suddenly, excitement abounds in the Dworshak kokanee community. Go get them Ken and Barb, I will look for you on the reservoir after I finish Springer fishing. John

2013-2016 Idaho Kokanee Fishing Reports Quick Links

We finally found some fish between Freeman Creek and Dicks Creek. Almost every one of them was 8". We met with the fish and game fishery people this morning and found them to be very informative. Bringing it down to simple terms (which is all I am capable of doing) this year's small fish...

Sounds like we may have an off-year. ?????? I plan to talk with the Fish and Game Department to see if they can give us any insight.

You're correct, Jumper, I had a senior moment. My wife said we were seeing 47 and 48 degrees with an occasional low 50 thrown in (late afternoon). This was surface temp at Canyon Creek. Still, I think we should be hooking some fish with those temps.

My wife and I put in 4 hours yesterday afternoon, mostly to enjoy the sun. We fished Canyon Creek and had no hits. We worked 10 to 35 feet down but never dropped to 50'. Water temp was 57 which is 10 degrees warmer than last year when we were doing well. Go figure.

What bothers me most is that fish are being caught in all the usual lakes at water temps lower than Dworshak's temps. Fish should be up and goin'. Nothing strikes fear in me like seeing the last can of kokes in the back of the cupboard. (Envision music from the shower scene in "Psycho").

Put in about 5 hours yesterday fishing the dam, Indian, and Canyon. Had a few "small" hits. When we finally landed one, we found out why the hits were small: the fish was about 5 inches. Yikes! We were fishing from the surface to 25 feet because our previous trip we worked deeper water and were...

Ken, we fished the dam (most of the day), Indian Creek and Canyon Creek. We are looking forward to your next week's report. Good luck! John

We were there yesterday and never hit a fish but we were probably fishing too deep (30 to 60 feet) trying to find bigger fish. We talked to a guy who caught a few at 20 to 25 feet and said they were all in the 6" range. Another fella said he attended a fish and game meeting a few nights ago and...

Yes, we usually fish near the dam or at Canyon Creek. We don't have much luck in the early season so we plan to experiment more with depths this year. We seldom see anyone else fishing so information is hard to obtain. There is a video on this sight with a guide fishing in January for kokes on...

Hi Ken and Barb! We are still working the steelhead but when that ends we plan to attack Dworshak with a vengeance! Typically our early season kokanee trips turn out to be "scouting" trips but that won't stop us from going. Besides, there is a certain amount of pride getting skunked with snow...

We use a slingblade or a similar flasher about 12 inches ahead of the hoochie. The short leader allows the slingblade to give the hoochie its action. We set the hoochie about 20 feet behind the ball although we seem to get hits at all distances back. Many times the wedding rings outfish the...

Hello Ken and Barb! I'm afraid my news is a little dated. Our last trip was July 24. We put 53 in the cooler, all caught in Canyon Creek near the floating dock. The downriggers ruled, set at 42 feet. Small flasher with a pink hoochie was the hot set-up but wedding rings caught their share. We...

We made a run to Mangus. Fishing was slow but we had never fished there before so we may not have been in the right places. We ran back to Dicks and Canyon. Fishing was slow but steady. We put 25 in the cooler. They were in very good shape. Only 2 trailers in the parking lot. It was a fun day. John
