    Payette Lake

Best Time of Year? When were you out there? I caught a few spawners aout then but they were bright red a gnarly. Put them back in the water to spawn. It seems that in the late spring they are pretty young and tend to be around the park launch. In August along Warren Wagoner and North...

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

Can’t say I agree with you. When fishing a lake with a lot of Kokanee, side scan isn’t really important. BUT, when fishing a larger lake with smaller schools of larger fish, it helps immensely. It is easy to troll right next to a school and miss them completely. Side scan tells me to turn...

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

Found the Garmin Echomap 73 SV on sale today and brought it home. Now looking for a universal pedestal so I can replace my Helix 5 with a bigger unit.

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

After researching this beyond my wife’s patience I have narrowed it down to 2 units. Garmin ECHOMAP™ UHD 73sv With GT56UHD-TM Transducer or Hummingbird HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G4N. Both in the $900 range. Anyone with experience or knowledge actually using them? Sure could use some...

Recommended Trolling Flap for Merc 40 outboard

My boat is even smaller being a 14.5’ boat. It also has a 12v minkota but I am not seeing any retrofits for existing trolling outfits. I will contact the closest minkota dealer to see what is available. Thanks

    Is that a 12volt system?

Recommended Trolling Flap for Merc 40 outboard

While the boat does have an electric motor in the bow, the fish finder is in the middle and the downriggers towards the back. Is there a reasonably price remote steerable electric motor?

Recommended Trolling Flap for Merc 40 outboard

I see several different models of trolling flaps for outboards. I used one on my old glass IO boat and it seemed to work ok until I forgot to take it up and managed to bend it. Anyone have suggestions on one for my new fishing boat?

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

The boat’s side console is relatively small and the current helix 5 unit barely fits in its space. While I really would rather have a 7” unit, I am not sure how to mount it using the mount that comes with it. I did some reading on the helix and there is a 5 inch unit that has side imaging but...

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

To be honest, I have little recent experience with fish finders. In the 90s had a boat in N Cal that had a Lowrance and it seemed to work really well fishing for trout and striped bass. In 2003 was stationed in Florida and had a Lowance chart recorder that came with the boat and it seemed ok...

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

Found this from when I was upgrading my 25’ pontoon boat. For Kokanee fishing do I need any imaging?

    Best Fishfinder?

Is there a place to go compare Garmin, bottom line, and Lowrance? Budget limit is $1,000.

    Best Fishfinder?

Which fishfinder will work best on my 1450 Crestliner boat, of course for hunting for Kokanee?

    trolling

A lot has to do with the temperature of the water you are going to be fishing on. Typically I troll for trout and salmon that seem to prefer 55 degree water. If you are fishing in a mountain lake where the thermocline is 25-30 feet or less, a hand operated downrigger is more than adequate. If...

Setting up new boat for kokanee?

I sent a request to Crestliner asking them how to best mount the downriggers and received a call from a company rep who basically told me not to use the Crestliner mount as the walls of the 1450 boat are too thin. Other than that, got zero help other than contact the dealer, who is closed until...

    Kokanee meat prep?

Another way to prepare Kokanee is to filet them and grill them on a cedar plank. The cooking goes a little slower so you have a little better control. We like them rather less done, not quite shasimi but close.

    Kokanee meat prep?

Do you still filet smaller fish? One of the lakes I fish here in Idaho has an abundance of relatively small Kokanee. I have been icing them, then gutting them-at the lake and leaving the heads on. Never thought about bleeding them and filleting them. It seems the filets would be too small...

Setting up new boat for kokanee?

I was planning on using the cannon raised platform and adjustable base but the base requires screws as the holes are counter sunk. I think I need to find a better solution. Is there a raised platform made for cannon downriggers that is bolted in?
