    Thoughts on a fish finder?

I just took the plunge and bought a Garmin livescope set up on Black Friday. Anyone set one up for ice fishing- what shuttle, pole, battery do you use?

    HVRR 2022

I made my first trip out to the regulating reservoir on Sunday. Fished from 11-4. Water is still cold, surface started at 42 warmed up to 47ish during the day. 43.5 at 5 feet, 42.8 at 10 and 42 down to 45 feet. Fishing was slow. 4 hook-ups 2 landed on a pink dodger with a white and pink willow...

    stink removal

What does everyone use to eliminate the smell of success after a Kokanee outing. I have a hard time getting rid of the smell after a day of kokes bouncing around in the boat.

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2021

4 trips, 4 limits The fishing has been excellent so far this year. Back at it this morning and caught 10 in about 2 hours. Hoochie Rigs, apexes and wee tads all behind dodgers all worked. 10-15 feet deep in 18-25 feet of water at 1.4-1.6 mph was working for me again today. Saw a fair amount...

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2021

Made my first trip out to the Regulating Reservoir last week. Pretty busy for a Wednesday morning with 6-7 other boats on the water. I started at 7 and had a 10 fish limit by 10. Most of the fish were in the 13-15 inch range. I shook off a few smaller fish at the boat and lost a few others...

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2016

My grandson headed home to Oregon so I had to fish by my lonesome this weekend. Hit the water early and had a limit of 10 by 9:30. The action was steady and everything seemed to be working. I caught fish on spinner rigs, spinners with hoochies, apexes and wee tads behind dodgers and cow...

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2016

I took my 3 year old grandson out on the regulating reservoir this week. He had fun and we managed to catch a limit of 10 in about 4 hours. Lost at least that many plus a bunch of hit and runs. Color didn't seem to matter, shoe peg corn and a gulp maggot at about 1.4 mph and 10 - 14 feet deep...

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2016

Got out on the lake this weekend. Started about 6:30 and had a limit of 10 by 9:30. I had 4 rods rigged (fishing 2 at a time) and it didn't seem to matter what I put out. Caught fish at 10 - 14 feet deep 40 feet behind the boat at 1.3 - 1.5 MPH. Caught fish behind dodgers (pink and copper...

Time for a new Fish finder on 21 ft pontoon

I picked up a Garmin Echomap plus 93SV on line for $765. Going from a 5" to a 9" is a big upgrade. I've only been out with it for a couple of hours so I haven't figured out the many features yet. I was able to see pods of fish suspended to the side of my boat with the side view and the chirp...

    1987 Merc 35hp Outboard....repair or replace?

While not related to the dying on the water issue, I would also replace the water pump impeller if it hasn't been done recently or you aren't sure when it was last done. Kits are relatively inexpensive and it's not too difficult of a DIY project - lots of Youtube videos out there. Don't forget...

    Fish Finders

I decided to pull the trigger and upgrade my fish finder. Went with the Garmin Echomap Plus 93SV - a big upgrade from my current 5 inch screen. I'm looking forward to being able to map my local kokanee lake. We'll see how useful the side view and down view (clear view on the Garmin) is and...

    Thoughts on a fish finder?

In watching some you-tube video reviews on the garmin echomaps they demonstrate how to set up the various displays with a variety of color options. In addition to reds and greens, there are blues, oranges, gray scale and reverse gray scale, maybe 10-12 different options. I don't know if any of...

    Fish Finders

If the lakes you typically fish are found on the maps that typically come with the depth finder/gps combos the lowrance is a pretty reasonably priced option. If you want side view and the ability to map the lakes you fish yourself, take a look and the garmin echomaps and the hummin'bird helix...

    Kokanee Flies

One thing I've learned through experience is that while fuller flies look better to my eye, the kokes seem to prefer sparser flies. Really sparse. I use hair, rubber leg material, flash a boo, krystal flash separately or in combination, but not that many strands total per fly.

Walker mini laker or other portable downriggers?

I agree with MtnCat1 - I started with the clamp on and when I upgraded from a scanoe to a crestliner Canadian I found a good deal on an electric cannon on ebay. It's nice because if I need to raise the balls quickly, I can hit the up button on the electric and wind up the clamp on. To me, the...

    Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir 2016

Looks like they are starting to fill the reservoir - should be able to launch in a couple of days. Early fishing usually means dealing with a lot of debris in the water, but I'm itching to get out there and give it a shot. Hopefully the wind lays down enough to make a run at it sometime this week.

Walker mini laker or other portable downriggers?

I have run my mini troll for probably 10 years with a 6lb ball with no signs of cracking or stress. I run ball trolls off it most of the time, so I'm running at max stress with no issues. I run it off the side because the transom on my boat is too thick even with the slide off plate removed...

    Water temp monitor gear

so I understand, with the $150 model do you drop the probe down on your downrigger, bring it back up and then scan through the display to see the temperature at 5' increments?

Looking for downrigging rod and reel suggestions.

I really like the 7', 2-10 lb test Vance's spiral wrapped rods. They run about $80 and are plenty sporty for kokes while having enough backbone for trout, walleye, wipers, etc.. I have a ambassadeur 5500 line counter on mine. You don't really need a line counter for the downrigger, but it does...
