New to down rigging

Is there anything on the Down Rigger market like a cord that you can pull your DR cable to the boat with out bending over side of boat stretching to grab DR cable... About ready to use a hagger to hook cable... pull it over to boat... snip line and place ball & line back into water...

hate reaching for cable/ball...

A good buddy of mine uses Big Jon Captains Pak DR that have a tip up boom. My canon easi trolls dont have that big of a boom so it is not that much of a lean to reach out for the cable and clip. I do have a hook on a long pole in my boat for grabbing the anchor line that I suppose would work great for what you are describing.

Just google downrigger ball retriever. I think a few companies make them.

Replace the short cable on your release with one that is 4 feet long. Then you can use an old fishing rod with a hook attached to the end on the rod to reach down and retrieve the release. 4 feet will allow you to remain standing while you attach the release.
This way you can leave your downrigger ball just below the water line while hooking up the release..
 
Fished Anderson Ranch yesterday, Monday 7/13, but only got 3 Koks.
We didn't try deeper than 60' and it sounds like 70 to 80 would have made the difference.

The surface water is pretty warm. I wonder how deep the 50-54 F range is now. Has anyone sampled the temperature at depth, or identified where the thermocline is recently? I couldn't make it out on my depth finder the other day.

Also, the lake level is dropping. From those with experience here, does that influence the fish to drop deeper as lake currents change?
 
I use the cannon version and find them indispensable when my booms are extended. I also tie the end to the railing. I had a swivel mount break two years ago and the ball retriever is the only thing that saved the Mag 10 TS from residing at the bottom of the reservoir.
 
Fished Lucky Peak on the 16th from 11:30 to 3:30. Two Kokanees and 1 trout. People we talked with said they were at 15 ft and some said 30 feet. We caught one at 24 ft and one at 30. Tried pink and orange hoochies. One was on pink and one on my own concoction of orange hoochie with silver sparkle and a macks spinner in front. Lots of people long lining pop gear.
 
Looks like the end is near. For the fist time this year I did not catch a single fish. In fact, I did not get a single hit. Talked to 6 boats and 1 had a singe 12" suicidal fish and 1 other boat had 1 hit.

Did not even bother going today.

Next up, Trout at Cascade.....
 
Found Kokes at point going into Macks creek.Many bites from 8-1 on Sat. Longlinging & down 24'.Pink slingblade ,pink hoochie,2 mph. Lost all but 1 ,17" also landed a fat trout. Go n Mon .Green crestliner. Stop by for sum bacon wrapped
 
Fished the 17th from 930 to noon and caught 2 fat kokes 16.5. And 17.5 inches both males one was starting to color up a bit and both developing kipes. Orange hoochies long lined behind sling blade style thingy. Would post pic but don't know how yet. Might run up tonight and see if the evening bite is on.

Change #1. Went Sunday afternoon from about 4 until 6 and picked up 2. 1 was 16"+ the other 18" +. Longlineing Ford Fenders and my Tiffany's Special.
 
Made our first trip ever to Anderson this past weekend, had great time camping at Curlew and even more fun fishing - action was hot and fast Saturday, couldn't keep two lines in the water. Fish were deep, started off at around 75-80 feet then when things finally slowed a bit dropped down to 88-90 feet and started catching again. Fished near power lines, lots of fishing boats out and looked like everyone was catching fish.
 
That must have been early in the day. We were up there a few hours Sat afternoon, and several boats that pulled out at the dam had nothing. We fished about 2 hours then got chased off by the thunderstorm, picked one up at 80 ft before opting to avoid the lightning.

I'll be out early next Sat, at Curlew since I'll be solo. Blue dodge, red boat, guy in shorts and crazed look in his eyes.
 
Hi, not sure if this is the right part of the forum....but I'm going to be moving to Boise in August. My 75 year old father is coming out to visit me shortly thereafter.

I'd like to take him salmon fishing, but I do not have a boat and he will only want to go "shore fishing", since he's older and gets tired easily.

Is it possible to fish for salmon from shore like you do trout? Also, was wondering if anyone can share some general tips on the best places for shore fishing on Lucky Peak Lake? Not asking you to give me your "secret spots". Just something I can take the old man and catch a few trout, and hopefully a salmon.

We fished 8:30 until about noon. It was crazy from about 9-11, then fishing slowed some until we went even deeper, then we picked up a few more. Luckily we were off the water and back at camp well before the thunderstorm , the wind was whipping pretty good for several hours after.

While kokanee are salmon, are you looking to get kokanee or something along the line of chinook.

You can catch kokanee from the shore, but it is VERY rare in most cases. Specially with them going up stream to spawn.

If you want to try some bank fishing, I would recommend driving a bit up road and fish the shore of arrow rock. Water levels will be lower by then, to find a good spot just look for something that is not pure sand, bit of rocks, maybe even a drop off like an underwater cliff you can find some if you look closely.

Thanks, I'm just looking to catch a few fish. I rarely see my dad as he lives out of state so I will take what I can get.

Can you catch chinook from shore?

Or would it be better to rent a boat?

From Lucky Peak? Nah, I WISH!!

However July 20 - August 16 is the season for chinook fishing, you would be fishing along the river banks though at places like the clear water, salmon river etc.


I would recommend renting a boat, but the whole point is just getting out there right? But its always better if you're catching them ;)
