I fished American Lake on wednesday 5/23 with Bill Herzog and my son David. We started at about 515AM and fished until about noon with a break for a Herzog special breakfast at about 930am. We caught 4 kokes at 10-55 ft of depth using the tackle and techniques that Bill has demonstrated in his presentations at 3 Rivers Marine and on channel 179 on saturday morning TV (NW Wild Country). It was an excellent learning experience for me.The guy knows how to catch em and explains how he does it. One big step up for me was learning to find fish with electronics.

Sounds like a wonderful experience RD!

Take advantage of those opportunities and subtle tips that you heard during the day.

It was indeed a guided trip, and i recommend it highly. If you have watched Bill Herzog on NW Wild Country or read his books/magazine articles, you appreciate the depth of his knowledge of fishing as well as his goofiness. tooexcited

WOW! A good friend of mine did some checking and found he did not have a guide license. Also another guy I know has seen him on american and he has no guide stickers on his boat. So what is the deal?

My son (Audball0770 on Gamefishin.com) got Bill's phone number off Northwest Wild Country program on TV, called him, made arrangements for the two of us to fish with him, which we did, and enjoyed it thoroughly as mentioned above. You will need to contact Bill Herzog for further details.

Just wondering, what is the deal? Is Bill Hezog guiding without a license? That def. would lose a lot of respect I have for his knowledge, ALL guides need to be licensed and pay all taxes and required fees. what was the post that was deleted above yours? I would go into Sportco and confront him about it, I believe he still works there occasionally. Bob R

If I ask a fellow fisherman to show me how, where, and with what, does that bring him the wrong side of the law? What if I pay for his gas, buy him lunch, and his favorite beverage? How goes the state draw the line, and when do I care?
If a person doesn't advertise and make his living from it , does the state care?

From WDFW's web site it seems to be pretty clear cut -

"A Game Fish Guide license is required if you accept a fee to take a person fishing for game fish in any state water. "

Tight lines

I heard kokanee Kid was guiding Sponge Bob.... I'm tellingnananana......You would think if the guy advertised on public radio he would have his stuff together... I have a great idea!!! Why not call Bill and ask him? More of the internet rumor mill here.. I dont know Bill and I dont know Kokanee Kid but it has seems for awhile that Kokanee Kid has had it out for "The General" I think you two should go out on a trip together and see who can catch the biggest kokanee then arm wrestle just before you sit down to a kokanee cook off candle lit dinner!!! fencing

I don't think $250 is just "gas and lunch".If Bill Herzog is guiding without a license he def. is doing all the guides who pay their bills to the state and to all of us whom buy sport licenses and play by the rules a disservice.. If you think it's O.K. for him to do this or think "it's no big deal you prob.don't follow the rules yourself.
This falls right into the class of over limiting and and using bait and releasing more then 5 fish to get a limit of larger fish. Imagine unlicensed guides in numbers knocking out limits day after day on a lake regular folks are having trouble limiting on. No one is too big to play by the rules we all are expected to follow. I'vbe never seen any negative posts about Herzog before, but these are serious allegations.Bob R

Sounds like you and your son had a great time. Herzog definatly knows kokes!! I've got a library of kokanee related material and have just about every artical he's wrote on the subject for STS magazine. It seems i learn something new everytime i re-read it and check out the pictures of his customized tackle....good stuff!!!
Thanks for sharing and have a great season!! signfishin
