My wife Melanie and I were fishing Summit Lake in WA.,caught some nice fall vamp kokes, but my wife took a 2 1/2 lb. smallmouth on a slingblade with a wiggle hoochie and corn down 60 ft. in 85 ft. of water. I wonder if any other fish you wouldn't ordinarily catch on koke gear have shown up? I've caught largemouth bass on spoons and wedding rings with worm but corn? I know the attractant was the wiggle hoochie in blue but it's still pretty unusual for me to find that fish suspended that deep in such deep water. If I could target them specifically I would.Maybe drop shotting, but how to know if they are down there? My sonar unit does not tell me what type of fish they are. Melanie would settle for one that would tell you if they are hungry. On a side note my wife took a bullhead catfish suspended in 40 ft. on a wedding ring with worm this summer in Black lake while trout fishing.Any other interesting catches? I figure the northern Cali crowd may have seen something unusual while stalking kokanee. Bob R

We catch non target fish while trolling for Kokanee all the time. We catch lake trout, rainbow trout, and burbot (ling) . We use trolling flies with dodgers, and flashers along with down riggers . Catching non target fish happens all the time and it just adds a bonus to the fishing trip!

I consider any salmonoid fish to be in the "typical" catagory when trolling with koke gear, but burbot? Now that's non-typical. And tasty, I bet. We'd love to catch burbot, but you prob. were deeper then I'd like to crank our mini-troll. I don't think they are in any of our lakes in western WA.Thanks for input. Bob R

A couple of years ago I tied a spinner that caught 5 different species of fish. I knew I really had something! But greed eventually bit me in the ass as I left it on too long without changing the leader and lost it. I tied several that I would swear were the same but never had the same results as that original spinner.

i've landed some perch while trolling for kokanee with dodgers and squids tipped with corn, i know they are opportunistic fish but i definitely was surprised

I was fishing for salmoniod; king salmonoid that is, not quite kokanee and caught a beautiful small mouth on a Brad's Superbait with tuna and an 11" flasher. Hard to get in the net though.

We sometimes get walleye, yellow perch, bluegill and redbreast sunfish, smallmouth, and rock bass. Any accidental species are in trouble if they are big enough to filet. TM

You catch all these species on kokanee gear or just while you are out fishing?Bob R

Hi Bob, we get walleyes mostly with the other species few and far between. Our mountain lakes aren't very fertile so lots of different species end up cruising the thermocline in search of plankton, or plankton eaters. Nantahala is our only koke lake and has all the species I mentioned plus largemouth ,rainbows ,and catfish. I use my koke tackle at other lakes trout fishing where we have caught increasingly more walleyes the last few summers. Over the years trolling spoons for trout we've caught an 8.5lb freshwater drum, two big carp( 13lbs & 17 lbs.),catfish, and an old shirt. I'm wanting to try up sized koke type tackle for stripers if I can get the time. TM

I've caught several burbot (ling) up to 26 inches while trolling for kokes in fairly shallow water (16 -24 feet) and straying into shallower portions of the cove where my hoochie ends up close to the bottom. It's always exciting for a moment when I feel the weight of the fish, but it becomes obvious it's a ling very quickly when they just twist and writhe instead of streaking and jumping like a koke. They eat great though - they don't call em poor man's lobster for nothin'.

Between walleye and burbot I'm really envious of the tasty side fish you both are catching, poor man's lobster indeed!).Thanks for replies. Bob R

Last year we caught a couple of catfish trolling with a red wedding ring and one big ole carp. Couldn't believe a catfish would go after a troll rig.
