I looked at the Ugly Stick CA11702UL at bass pro two days ago. I held it and a lamiglas at the same time, the lamiglas was lighter but the actions were about the same. Lamiglas is a 7' 4-10lb and the stick is a 7' 2-6lb but I really did not see much difference in action. The kicker is the lamiglas is $74 and the stick is $40. I know that the lamiglas is probably better but is it $34 better? Just interested it anyone is fishing the Ugly Stick ultra lite?

Yes, I love them. From soft faced kokanee, crazy wipers, to hard faced catfish. These rods are an all around durable good action rod when matched with a quality reel.

I use ugly sticks on every thing except kokanee, like the red lami JJs better but wouldn't hesitate to use the lite ugly stick. bi mart has the red JJs for 40.00 on sale a lot in fact I bought 6 at the central Oregon sportsman show last year but JJ has came out with a new velocity line of rods and reels that is very close looking to the tica line. I bought a combo to try at Portland show for my granddaughter it was the pink rod and the black ops reel that I like maybe a little better than my tica camin GJs I have now. for a look you can go to his site or kokanee tackle carries them and check them out there. dfly

I used these rods as my 1st ultra-lite downrigger rods. Melanie and I liked them but the guides are made like s***! Inserts pop out very easily. That said the rods were o.k. but not sensitive enough to tell when a small fish was on the line.Sometimes had 3 to 4 inch fish on and only picked up on it when a vicious fish slashed that baby! We switched to lamiglass rods in the same price range ($40 or so). numbers are MB702UL, and CG70DR (classic glass). Both have more sensitive tips then the ugly stix but are not as durable as far as the blanks are concerned, but guides are good. The MB702 is a newer model, nice and light, other may not be available anymore. All rods mentioned are spolled with 15lb. test braid as we occasionally pull up some large fish (7 to 9 lb. sockeye were a hoot!) and get snagged on some nasty structure. Heavy line pulls out and light leaders keep it all in perspective. Use abu's on all rods as ticas are machined like crap! As a former machinist for winchester-western 40 years ago and sub-contracted out parts for boeing 30 years ago I'm a stickler for nice millwork. I really like the Daiwa Lunas but can't get the smallest one in left hand retrieve. Also kind of pricey. The next rod may be a fly rod blank I wind myself as a spiral wrap, but I run my hands along rod to bend and set up in clip, off-set guides may interfere with that, don't like the idea of laying rod down while setting up. Bob R P.S. Is the ugly stick still called "kokanee special" ?
