Best line for bait casting reel

Kokanee Fishing Forums

Help Support Kokanee Fishing Forums:

I almost always used fly rods and reels for my kokanee fishing. I put 7/8 wt reels on 4/5wt rods. I use the bigger reels for the larger spool dia. I load them with backing then go to 12 lb. Power Pro. To that I add 100 feet of Maxima ultra green. When the mono is all in the water I know I'm far enough back from the boat. If I have an inexperienced angler on board, I have them use an ultra light out fit with an old Shimano Bantam 100 on it. I load it with the same power pro/mono set up.

Unless you are fishing the Gorge or Wallowa Kokes really don't fight all that much. We like to use the lightest gear possible to put some fight in the fish. There's no need for a clicker. These are Kokes not Tuna.
Daiwa Spinmatics with abu 4600's and 8 lb Maxima UG will handle any Koke you'll see around here.

there are so many varibles on line choice what i see here is excellent advise 6#8# !0# mono is excellent light grn P lne. I use 30# tuff line on my main line it so thin no stretch, then i will go to 6# mono on my rigging its work excelt for me on Kokanee, I can easly switch over by just changing my rigging if i want to target brn trout at wickiup/or Macks at Odel. There are alot of time I don't use my down riggers and go direct sorry to say i don't always use swing blades/Rocky Mountains. I have great sucess pulling ford fender or other type flasher not using a wobbler with a hoochie/ but pulling a small spinner and special baited hook. Whats so nice know being able to pull/use two poles. There been days were my special small spinners&bait will out fish the pole using wobbler and a hoochies

Reels and Line

I use 10 lb test P-Line on my GT 151, GJ 151 Tica Caimans and Abu Garcia 5601 BCX. They are all lefthand retrieves.
The Ticas are brand new and I'm very impressed with the machining
workmanship, incremented drag settings, levelwind and clicker/strike indicator.
The side case housings are easily removed for cleaning, grease/oiling matainance and line spool swaps ( a very nice quality feature ).

The Tica GT's are a new model this year replacing the CA and CT Tica models.

The Tica KT Caimans are reasonably priced and great trolling application reels for Kokanee, Cutthroat and Trout.
One thing about the Tica KT's is the levelwind is not machined/geared for casting purposes. It only functions when retrieving line back on the spool.

Also, Tica levelwind reels come with a nice neophrene/velcro reel cover.

If you stack and have to let 2 lines out at once, a clicker is paramount unless you grow some extra hands to prevent backlash on the second reel.
