Spring here at the ranch usually starts with spraying the "Weed Of The Year" and we have to spray early or the weeds can get ahead of us fast. This year's weed is a Russian Thistle and I'm trying a new (to me), weed killer sold at Tractor Supply that is in reality a high powered fertilizer that kills by over fertilizing and is deemed safe for the livestock. In one of my pastures I have a two-acre pond that I stocked over the years with various fish, bass, trout, sunnies, etc. for the grandkids to fish for. Weed growth around the pond edges is exceptionally heavy so I stopped the tractor, shut off the boom, and grabbed the hand-held wand and carefully sprayed the edges of the pond - that's when things got weird.
As soon as the overspray hit the water, a population of sunnies swarmed in, followed by several trout, catfish off the bottom, and within minutes, some big browns I didn't even know were in there - all mobbing the area where the spray hit the water to the point of frothing the surface. It was a riot.
Not knowing what to make of this, I went clear around to the other side of the pond and sprayed the surface. Within minutes, every fish in that pond was bubbling and churning where the overspray hit. This was 10 o'clock in the morning, full sun. Just to be certain, I went to another spot, tried it again and got the same results. Where ever this stuff hit the water, the fish mobbed to it. It's the strangest behavior I've ever seen. Have any farmers out there ever seen this before?
I guess I will have to try this stuff as a new scent this year. Really odd! Just thought I'd pass this on.
