How do you guys feel about the blackbox for the downriggers? fact or fiction.
Sounds reasonable but have never known anyone that used them. I would like a little input before I spend that much on one.
Once again Thank You for your help
John

What brand of downriggers do you have? Manual or electric? Black boxes do work but better with some downriggers than others.

I wouldn't own electric DR's with out some kind of voltage control. My Cannon's have adjustable PIC but without that I would definitely want a black box. There is no such thing as a boat with the correct current for all species! I can tune my guests side to the correct voltage and set my side off of the correct reading and while running the same lures they will catch fish 3 to 1 over my side of the boat. If they get to full of themselves I can switch it back and move those same numbers to my side of the boat. (wink)

I had one 2 boats ago, I found it worked great on lake trout, never had as much luck with the salmon, it would bring them to the finder, but not make them bite

My experience with the box working was standing next to the guy while he turned the dial and watched rods pop before he got his hand off the dial. It made me a believer.

Does anyone know if Braided Line helps?

I have 2 Scotty 1060 manuals , 1 with braid... & 1 with cable that I want to change because of the way it can coil & come off the spoll.

Braid makes the whole thing neutral. It eliminates what is referred to as a "hot boat" which is steel cable putting off too much current or repelling fish. However, the black box produces current in a range that the fish find attractive.

PS, my Cannon downriggers with ion control are basically neutral. I don't use a black box.

You guys better hush up about how good the black box works or the wrong eyes are going to read about it and make it illegal.....101blah101

If I were running Cannon's with a static, non-adjustable Positive Ion Control I would disconnect it and get a black box. While using a neutral boat won't repel fish it won't do anything for the attraction either!

That must mean I dam# good! signfishin laugh hyst

101goodpost101Thanks. I ordered a black box. Found one cheaper later.101duh101 never fails. I think the next time I will order but not send it. Then buy the cheaper one.laugh hyst

Im a firm believer in the black box. I have definatly noticed a difference in my catch rates after I sold my boat that had adjustable ion control downriggers. My current boat has cannon mag 5's that meter out .52 which is too low. Needs to be in the 0.57 to 0.60 range for koks so a black box purchase is in my future. One day I was out "guiding" my 3 year old daughter and we were catching koks non stop just about as fast as we could re-rigg and then everything quit. So I start changing colors, speed, dodgers and just could not buy another bite. I then noticed that my little deckhand had turned the control knobs up to max voltage on all 4 riggers. Turned the power down and the bite started again.

Very Good question Dave. The blackbox website FAC had this to say:

Q. I have a Cannon or other electric downrigger that uses the short stop feature. Can I use this with the Black Box?

A.The Cannon short stop feature is a system where the electric downrigger automatically stops when the weight breaks the surface of the water. This is accomplished by using the downrigger wire as part of the electric control circuit. When the Cannon downrigger is turned on, a strong positive charge of up to 7 volts is imposed on the wire. When the weight breaks the surface, the circuit is broken and the downrigger stops. The Black Box
is going to impose a steady voltage of whatever you dial onto the wire (.5 volts .6 volts etc.). If a downrigger with a short stop is turned on with the Black Box running, the Black Box voltage control circuit will not let the voltage on the wire rise above your setting.
The result is normally the short stop feature will be over ridden and the weight will not stop until it jams into your downrigger pulley. If the Black Box switch is turned to natural voltage position prior to turning on the downrigger, the automatic stop will work.

Im going to rethink getting a blackbox because I can just visualize watching my shark downrigger balls breaking off at the boom because Im not paying attention to the short stop not working.

How close does your lure have to be to the downrigger wire in order for the black box current to be effective? Will it still be effective if you have 100' of line out??

Jestfishin-
I would stay around 5 to 15 feet from the wire to get the greatest effect. At 100 feet there wouldnt be much of a benefit.
