We are looking to make our first trip to the Gorge this weekend. We would like to tent camp away from any crowds. Can we camp on the beach anywhere? Any suggestions would be great!

I've seen many, many rigs lakeside on the Wyoming side especially along the western shoreline. The Utah side is restricted to established campgrounds and heavily enforced. Make sure you obtain a National Forest permit before you set up your camp and you should be fine. I'm not the law so be sure to obtain all the proper permits to avoid trouble.

Due to the EXTREME DRY CONDITIONS and the WIND we have been having lately, I would advise heavily not to have any open flame 101cactus101 . Campfires are probably not permitted now with all the fires raging. There is a National Forest Service Office at the main intersection in downtown Manila, UT but the office is closed on weekends. They will provide you with answers to all your questions.

Actually, if you do not use the developed facilities and are camped at least either 1/4 or 1/2 mile from them, no permit is needed. I can't remember the exact distance but it is in the regs.

You do have to supply some sort of toilet if you camp away from the developed camp grounds though. Other than distance, I believe that is the only restriction.

Thanks for all the info. I will give the office a call and figure out any additional restrictions. Off the topic of this forum, but does anyone know if you can rent or buy water skis anywhere near the lake?
