I have come to realize that no matter what color combo I have dragging, as long as I have the correct speed, scent and size I still hook up......... Alot. Sometimes we are pulling 4 completely different rigs, except scent. Scent seems to be more important than anything. Depending on the day anyway. Any thoughts?

I have had stretches of weeks at a time when what you say is true, and then everything changes. The fish become much more selective for both color and/or lure design. Last week one rod was hitting four to one over the other rods, the weeks before limits were fast and furious with all different depths and rig designs. One thing is for sure, the minute I think I have it all figured out I get humbled. That is the allure of the koke addiction.

I think depth, speed and lure action is the most important. the colors do help but without the right action they won't bite no mater if its the perfect color. to me scent is last I have limited out without it when I accidently left it home but always use it. dfly

I actually think color matters. I have seen two jigs, one old and one new, but the same size and type, fish completely different. One is one fire and the other can't buy a bite. The difference is there is a very small difference in the color between them.

Saturday just after daybreak I was running the exact same setup on each side. Same dodger, same setback, same depth, same distance from hoochie to dodger, same corn (natural, no scent), same hoochie style and size. The ONLY difference was the color. Hot pink was getting hit constantly, the other color was not.

I think truth be told, this happens all the time when the set ups are exactly the same. There are days when a certain rod on the boat catches all the fish. Sometimes there is just no explanations.

I've found that scent is the last thing i worry about. My main concerns are depth, lure action and color. Color seems to be the key alot of days but without being at the right depth your just wasting your time. Like FRG mentioned a small difference in color can make a big difference. I made a jig a couple years back that was very effective and tried to copy it with the same color from a few different companies... ended up having to go back to the original manufacturer's color to get the fish interested again. This seems to be especially true with flouresents and glows. Of coarse there are those days when they're biting and anything you throw at them gets hit.

BiggsCountry No offense but you must be new to fishing/color does matters alot it a combination of color/ speed/scent to put the package together it could be crappie/trout/salmon etc you need to understand the basic if you think just your trolling speed is catching the fish your missing the picture/if you thing its scent then why not anchor throw something out with scent on it and wait for the fish to come up and nibble on your hook it dosen't happen. I posted this a few time there is a book out Why color matters by Phil Rabideau The Master Angler. Read the book and then tell us color dosen't matter. There are times everything works and there are times nothing works I can tell you you wish you had the money I have in my equipement and tackle boxes to harvest a quest (fish) . You need to get educated and start reading up good luck to you.

I have 37 years of fishing under my belt. I have fished all across this country. At one point in my life I had yearly non resident fishing licenses in 11 different states. I think that confidence in a particular color has a lot more to do with it than the color it's self. If it was truly the color, wouldn't we all have the same favorite color?

as far as color, one of greenpeters go to colors is watermellon and works for lot of people and limit with it, I have tried it for 8 years and never cought a fish with it and have sling blades, dodgers, and lures, but limit with pink same setup different color. so I don't know what to think but I do have more confidence in reds and pinks because that is what works for me. dfly

If color wasn't that important how do you explain lakes that have particular colors that work best. Colors and contrast that show best on bright days, dark days, and up and down the water colume really do make a difference. After reading thousands of kokanee reports over the last 15 years it's obvious color matters.
I've had days where both sides of the boat had the same lure, speed, set-back, scent, dodger, leader length, corn, ball trolls, depth, etc. One side gets hammmered... 5 fish one right after the other. The other rod got absolutly zero action. The only difference was the lure color. Once that rod got changed to the same color we couldn't keep the fish off. This was over a large school during a HOT bite... color absolutly mattered that day.
To answer the question "if it was truly the color, wouldn't we all have the same favorite color?"... look at the success of pink.

Hey Silver, I do believe that color is a factor along with action, speed and depth but could not pass up the "Jack Handy Deep Thoughts" question you pose....Does pink work because the fish want it, or do we catch them on pink because that is what we all drag?....

Heck, i don't know... maybe a combination of both? I just used that as an example due to it's overwhelming success according to the reports i've read.
After mainly fishing the same lake for past 10 years and having used every color at one time or another it's obvious they do have their preferences (and they change throughout the day and from year to year.) The most success i've had with pink has been in the late afternoons. Is it my go-to color? No.
The last few years i've been doing some experimenting with colors not normally associated with kokanee fishing. From what i've seen color still matters but contrast can be just as important (if not more.)

Da Mr.BiggCountry what your telling me is you have been doing a lot of things wrong for 37 years. Just because your fishing for 100 yrs doesn't make it correct. I see this mind set in a lot of experience Anglers. Believe me in my line of work I meet hundreds/ On this Forum you have World record holders /World record holders in line classes and when these folks speak you listen/ I'm stating get YOURSELF educated and learn WHY? you are catching fish everyone catches fish but 10% of the best fisherman catch (harvest) 90% of the fish because they know the one question WHY? I related to you a book THE MASTER ANGLER do yourself a favor read it and you would never even bring up a topic like this. There are different colors that work at different depts./different water temp/there is green water there is blue water/ Hell one of the most important factors is water temp. If you broaden your horizon and listen you can become a better fisherman I consider it a great day when I can learn something from another fisherman. good luck your going to need it

mrmike, he is catching fish on a regular basis. Not everyone does it the same way. Know when to tip your cap and move on, it's better than coming across arrogant.

Great idea. Here's something worth learning.

Just my honest option when another person state's color don't mean sh!@#$%^&T Honestly I feel there isn't anything this person can teach me but that just my personnel option

^ That last sentence pretty much sums it up. I'm sure we've all had a day where color didn't matter and everything we threw at them got hit. It isn't the norm... but it does happen.
