is black a good color to use? i would assume they can't see it way down deep.

black is a good color to use in stained/murky water. Rule of thumb dark color dark water. Red will turn black after 16 ft. There is a book why color matters will help you alot trying to find the right colors in different water conditions and temp. explains flourisent colors etc.

Believe me... they can see it. I've also read about darker colors for stained water/overcast days, but don't hesitate to try it in clear water on sunny days too. I'm not sure if it's the contrast of it they see at depth against the sky above...whatever it is it works, especially when added between other colors.
