I have noticed when fishing for Kokes at the Gorge there seems to be Macs either suspended or hoovering near the bottom. Does anyone try to double stack with a mac lure and try to catch macs while Koke fishing or would this be a waiste of time?

We always catch our share of rat macks even with all koke gear out. My personal opinion is that it is a waste of time because a 4 lbs koke fights better than any size Laker, AND and I can eat it.

I like to run a line about 125 ft back and 20 ft below my Koke gear. Super D is right, you catch them on Koke gear anyway. I do it with larger lure hoping for bigger Macks. Once in a while, it happens, a big one!

You know GF thats what I was thinking/hoping to do is catch Big Macs while trolling for Kokes. I have marked some pretty big fish out there. And was kinda wondering if it would be productive to put on some larger mac lures and drag them around while chasing the Awesome kokes around.

Don't quite know what you mean about not eating Macs, we caught quite a few on Lake Chelan a few years ago and they were quite tasty, maybe you are not bleeding them or something, we eat a LOT of fish at our house, Macs were quite good on a grill or baked in the oven. We eat a lot of Dollies out of Lake Quinalt(a tribal permit fishery) and people tell us they are also no good for eating but they are really good if taken care of. We eat a LOT of trout, native cuts out of the lake and salmon quite a bit. Kokes are an exceptional eating fish, buts most fish taste good if handled properly and cooked fresh. Bob R

The macs at flaming gorge are good eating if they are the pups under 5lbs any bigger they are full of fat and is not that good tasting

The lake trout you see around the Kokes are more than likely smaller fish. They are eating the plankton just like the kokanee. They dont go to an all fish diet, if at all, until they reach around 24". The rainbows, kokes, and macs are all plankton eaters. If you want bigger macs, you have to be right on the bottom, usualy around some structure like drop-offs or humps. I'm not saying it cant happen, but it's more luck to catch a big one trolling under kokes.

We doublestack for kokes, but get our share of pup macs too. The smaller ones are excellent to eat-but don't compare to kokes. You CAN tell the difference for sure of what your bringing up from the bottom.
