exploding fish

My son and I went to Riffe yesterday, boated ~40 fish, most about 8". Kept 9 that were 12-14". One was fat and we figured gutworms. When my son started to cut off it's head, it exploded, blew the head the rest of the way off. A bunch of yellow-pink "gel" came out of the body cavity, the meat was covered with blisters and sores. Has anyone else seen any thing like that?

Never heard or seen anything like an exploding koke. Would definately give the fish and game guys a heads up on that.
