Froggie and I did our first official koke hunt of the 2010 season today. We hit the water before 7:00 and headed up to Coyote Creek. Froggie had apop up right away on her wedding ring. A pretty 13" bow. 15 or 20 minutes she has another attack on the wedding ring and this time it's a 12"koke. In the box...we had released the bow. That was it for quite awhile. By 10:30 we were in the main lake and I got my first melones koke of the year. A 12" bullet. Again on a wedding ring! As I let it out and was getting ready to clip it in the release I got a hit and boat an 11 incher. 2 more for the box more as they both were bleeders. A few minutes later Froggie has a take-down and boats what we at first thought was a koke until we netted it. I guess it was a baby brown. Almost a salmon tail but covered with spots. The reason I say "baby" brown...no red in any of the spots. Anyway it was like 12" and healthy and we release it. Makes 2 trout and 3 kokes to the boat and it's noon. Everything caught from 7-20 feet and all on wedding rings! All between 11 and 13 inches long. We head into the dam and I get another 12 incher (koke) and that's all for me for the day...3 kokes 11-12". We cruise the main lake and Froggie Boats a 13" koke on a small flatfish...go figure! That was all for the day. We were on the wter from 7:00 until 4:00 for 5 small kokes and a couple of planter trout.
It was a beautiful day and the lake was empty but it is not quite ready! Another couple of weeks might make a reel difference!
Froggie has the pics but probably won't get them on until tomorrow.

Skunk's off with this pretty trout that we released:

Tortuga gets a koke too:

Here's a strange one that I get on my wedding ring again:

This is what we brought home for the day:

Great first trip to Melones and a baby brown to boot. That bigger koke looks veer healthy which is a good sign for the season. Tks for the report. Kind of wish I would have headed up there last weekend.i

Thanks for the report! It's great to see what's going on at Melones. It's very pretty there in the spring and early summer. I haven't braved the August heat there yet, but I bet it's hot!

August Heat

Yep it's hot here in August...and July...and most of June....that is why god gave us misters to cool it off!
