I'm wondering if there is a fish finder that puts the temperature sensor on the downrigger ball. In my limited exposure to the blithering array of fish finders, I have seen finders that do just about everything except make a Mexican omelet, but haven't seen one yet that measures the temperature below the surface. Thanks for any help!

That's pretty cool. It looks like they replace the down rigger weight with a unit with the electronics in it. The links inside the main page are broken, but it looks like a good tool. Wonder what it costs....

Yes there is a system that will measure the temp,at the downrigger weight. It's expensive ,but from the little bit of research that i have done,it looks to work pretty well. Here is a link.

Sorry about that try this link http://www.kelloutdoors.com/Depth Raider Speed and Temperature Monitor.htm scroll down,it gives a lot of info about the depth raider.

Thanks for the other link! I like the design of the unit except for the part where you have to use coated downrigger wire. I wonder if the coating got damaged anywhere if it would stop the unit from working.

I have the FishHawk Thermotroll 840 from this company:

They just came out with a newer unit as well.... arghhh... more toys to think about as it is the next generation product. I've had mine for a year now and it is a great tool to have especially to find the thermocline. The nice thing is it is remote.. meaning it pings up the signal to the special transducer you would need to mount, just like a fishfinder transducer. I love it when I go to a new lake and I can instantly get the water profile as it is real time. As for the speed wheel they do not work well at lower speeds (ie kokanee fishing) so I don't really care about that part of it as the GPS is accurate enough for me.

Kokanee tend to be in that 49 to 60 degree water but more so in the 54 to 58 usually when they are actively feeding. Of course there are exceptions but I've been monitoring this and correlating it all season now and was amazed to find them once in a while at 62 degrees... likely where their food was located.

Hey Monte - I'm sure I bought it online by doing a bit of price shopping via Google for the model number and looking for what appeared to be a reputable online store with a decent price. It's really a specialty item so not that many people have them. I took a look at the new model, the X4 and it looks really good and they even made the probe backward compatible with the older head unit. You can always come take a look at my unit on my boat some time since you are not that far away.

I'll see if I can find the online store that I bought it from as well.

Thanks Kevin...I'll do that. I'd like to see your unit sometime as well. Your handle seems reflective of how you fish....with all the hi tech goodies. As I'm just getting started on accumulating all the gadgets, I seem to be monopolizing the "new thread" que on the forum. I hope it's OK...with all these experts to keep an eye on me, I just may be able to catch another Kokanee in 2009.

Always glad to help Monte and the more you ask the more you learn but time out on the water is critical. I tend to get into all the gadgetry due to my computer background but you don't have to have all these toys to catch fish.. Grab some jigs and go to Pardee this weekend. I am heading back for some more jigging fun on Sunday since it was so much fun last weekend.
