Sorry for the delay on this but I thought a report from last weekend might be helpful this weekend after the storm front moves through and anglers can get back on the water.

It was surprising how things changed for us while fishing last weekend. Throughout the weekend we caught fish from the surface down to 23 feet OTW and with long lines on top both from the boat and on a planer board.

What caught me off guard the most was as spread out as the Kokanee were they never really responded to Flashers/Pop Gear at all and caught very few with them as an attractor. This is totally opposite of what I have found this time of year in past. We adjusted to primarily Dodgers at all levels of depth.

Hoochies/Squids seemed to be the most effective lure the entire weekend with small size 1 Glow in the Dark Pink Sockeye Slammers second and spinners seamed the least effective on Kokanee for us the entire weekend. We caught Rainbow's on pretty much everything we offered Kokanee. It is always amazing to me how beautiful the Rainbow's from the Gorge are. We also found that longer leaders produced more fish. In fact we found hoochies trailing our dodgers by 14" to be most effective. The first one was an accident when tying my leader and figured we try it temporarily and found it to be the ticket to success.

On Friday the Double Neon Glow Blue and Pink Hoochies fished the best with Orange trailing third but producing well. We also caught quite a few fish on a Pink Mack's Lure Kokanee Pro Smile Blade spinner with the size 6 hooks replaced with size 2.

Saturday we couldn't buy a bite on Blue or Orange lures and found that our Neon Pink Hoochie trailed 14" behind our Watermelon Dodger produced the best. This is what Brian Ekx's 3.97 lb Kokanee that won 1st place in the Kokanee division and my 35.96 lb Laker that won second in the Lake Trout division were caught on. In fact, it was the same rod and gear.

We started Sunday morning in the flats on the east side of Big Bend ( I think that is what the area is called?) which is where we caught both the larger Kokanee and the Laker on Saturday. We quickly found that the Kokanee moved out and all we could catch was laker pups. After about an hour of circling the area looking for Kokanee we gave up and trolled around the bend and north past Buck Board. We caught and released both Kokanee and very nice Rainbow's pretty much nonstop in the river channel north of Buckboard until we had to go to the weigh in. Unfortunately none were big enough to take to the scales.

Monday was a tougher morning. Well I say morning but we slept in and didn't start fishing until around 9:00 a.m and fished until 12:30. We fished the same area as Sunday north of Buckboard landing primarily Rainbows early and found Kokanee later with the bite becoming constant. Orange and Blue lures kicked back in and did well.

Here is a list of techniques and gear used:

Trolling depth: Surface to 23 feet OTW all four days.

Trolling Speed: 1.3-1.6. The larger fish seemed to hit around 1.3 to 1.4

Bait: All lures/Hooks were tipped with Berkely Gulp Maggots in Pink or white colors

Winning fish depth. Both Brian Ekx 1st place Kokanee and my 2nd place Lake Trout were caught 8ft OTW and 75 feet behind the boat (guessing 15 feet down) in/around 25 of water.

Hottest Lures: Definitely 1.5 Double Glow Hot Pink Hoochies with Flash-A-Boo skirts.

Hottest Dodgers: Vance's Watermelon, Speckled Copper Pink, Speckled Copper Blue, Copper Pink, Nickle Green Metalflake, Candy Green. Speckled Silver Blue.

Next hottest lures: #1 Florescent Glow in the dark Sockeye Slammers in Pink, Orange and Yellow Pink. We found that smaller lures definitely out fished larger lures and didn't do well on spinners except the Mack's lure Mini Kokanee Pro in Pink caught a lot of fish. I think the Smile blade made the difference on that small/short spinner.

Worst producing lures: Chartrese lures of all types for Kokanee. We caught a lot of Rainbows on chartreuse but didn't fair well at all on Kokanee. Spinners, we just couldn't seem to get a spinner bite going.

Special thanks to Derk and his fine crew at the Villa for putting on another terrific derby.

Special thanks to Les and Loretta at Buckboard Marina for their great hospitality and services. They have been there for us 3 years in a row now to assist us with trailer problems. We have found their service at Buckboard to be the best and topped off with very reasonable rates. This is huge for those of us that are visiting from out of state on tight schedules.

I will try to include pictures of the fish when I get them ready.

Hi Kokanee Kid,

If I lived back there I would be happy to take you fishing. But I live in the Sacramento California area and it is around a 16 hour pull for me to the Gorge. This time I did it the right way! I flew into Rock Springs and my partners picked me up while on their way in from Colorado with their fully rigged boat in tow.

I actually have very little experience on the Gorge only fishing it a couple days a year during the Villa and Buckboard derbies. If I had to guess I would say that I have fished the lake less the 18 days in the last 4 years. The lake is truly an awesome fishery.

The Gorge has been very good to us!....Here are our derby results for the last 3 years:

2009 Buckboard Derby
: My partner Brian Ekx won 1st place in the Buckboard derby and set the Wyoming/Utah state record with a 6.26lb Kokanee.

2010 Buckboard Derby: Very tough weather and didn't fish for a few hours on Saturday because I had my kids with me and was concerned about their safety. Finished either 6th or 7th place I can't remember exactly.

2011 Villa Derby; My partner Brian Ekx wins 1st place with a 3.97 lb Kokanee.
I take second in the Lake Trout division with a 35.96 lb fish caught on our Kokanee rod and 12lb test line while targeting Kokanee. Long fight!!

Unfortunately, we cannot make it back for the Buckboard Derby this year. I will be working on that Saturday here in California and my partner Brian Ekx is getting married that weekend.

I recommend Flaming Gorge to anyone that enjoys fishing for Kokanee, Rainbow's or Lake Trout and has the time to get there!

Take care.

Great update Vance. I will be making my debut soon at the Gorge. This weather so far is keeping me high & dry.

You know, the Oregon Derbies are much, much closer to Sacramento, and that little guy from Redding could use the schooling! laugh hystlaugh hyst

We sponsor Kokanee Power Oregon ( a great organization) and I would love to get the time to fish some derbies up there. The problem is getting time away from work. Time? Where does it go?

He has been educated. I won 1st place in a derby on Lake Shasta (his home lake he guides on) in 2003 with a 13.49 Brown Trout I caught on a #2 Purple Pirate Sockeye Slammer 50 feet deep in 140 feet of water while targeting Rainbow's. (my memory is not this good! I had to do a google search to find the story) As with the 35lb Laker last weekend, this big Brown was caught on our light 7'rod, but it only had 10lb test line so it took forever to tire and come to the net... Completely exhausted.

I'm not into killing Brown Trout; they are a sacred fish to me and I feel they are trophy that should be cherished. Especially in lake Shasta because California Fish and Game no longer plants Shasta with Browns and the fishery is totally dependent on natural spawning. I tried to revive it but it just kept rolling over and wouldn't revive so I had to keep it.

I donated the fish and it is now mounted and hanging in the Basshole Bar and Grill in Lakehead CA on the upper shores of Lake Shasta.

The guy you are referring to hung one of his lures in my fishes mouth for months......

He said it was a Joke. He is a friend, so I guess it was a joke.

Vance, I met Brian and his Dad at the I-Cast show in Las Vegas last summer. Great guys, we talked Koke fishing at the Gorge for a long time. I have 2 of of the spiral wrapped rods and I love them. The 35 lb mac must have been some battle on that set-up. Congrats on the derby and keep up the good work on the tackle.

Priceless report... Great job Vance and Brian? Are you fishing The Pedro derby in a few weeks?

Were you running the slammers behind your dodgers or naked and if behind a dodger how far back from the dodger? Are you tipping the slammers as well?

Kevin

Hi Jackson Slayer,

Scott and Brian Ekx are great guys! I couldn't have better partners both in our business and while fishing derbies. I hope to see you back at ICAST this year.

Kevin, we were tipping our hooks with Berkely Gulp Maggots on the Gorge last weekend. For those that have not used Berkely Gulp Maggots they make two types. Berkely has something similar called Gulp Alive packed in water that doesn't work very well. Get the type that is not packed in water it stay's on your hook better.

I run the Sockeye Slammers 14-16 inches behind my dodgers.

I do plan on fishing the Don Pedro derby and hope to see you there.

These Gulp Maggots work great! I use them out here in California where we can fish with white shoepeg corn also to mix things up a little. Some days it out fishes the corn, some days the corn out fishes the Gulp Maggots.
