My wife and I planned an ice fishing trip to the gorge during the week of valentines. Our first day we arrived in town in the morning. We got checked into our room, got our pass and licenses.
We went to check the ice and with the advice from Clark Sabey went to some fishable ice. I went to a place that we find them in the boat a lot of times and drilled my wifes holes and my holes. 1st drop Im thinking that its taking forever for my jig to hit the bottom so I decide to close the bail and set the hook and ive hooked up to at 20lb plus fish! I fight this fish for 10 minutes before I even get a look at him. I get him to the hole and we lose him at the hole trying to pull him through!
I throw my fit and we start fishing again. Its been 30 minutes and I hook up with another 20lb plus fish! I fight this fish for about 10 minutes and get him to the hole and guess what? I lose this one at the hole as well.
I wanted to cry but, gained my composure and went back to fishing. 30 minutes later and my wife hooks up with a great fish. He was 39" and estimated him at 25 lbs. She caught it on her homemade purple pole and it was her best fish through the ice ever!
The next day we fished with Clark Sabey in his boat. Within 30min my wife has a 21lber in the boat! In the next 3 hours we catch 4 more 15-20lb lakers my wife with 3 and me 1, at least 15 bites. The wind came up and we had to get off the lake but Im sure if we could of stayed we would of caught more. Clark was fun to fish with and we had a blast.
The ice is going fast so we decided to play it safe and fished between buckboard and confluence the last day but only got a rainbow, no ling. We had a great trip and it will be one to remember.
Big Lake Trout should be caught, handled correctly and turned back to catch another day.
