Not what you think. I was fishing Hayden yesterday and noticed a LOT of swallows. In the area the birds were the most concentrated I was marking quite a few fish. Then I started noticing little blue/grey flies. Do Kokanee feed on fly hatches?

Often in the morning when the fish are still high in the water column, we will watch for the ospreys and eagles circling and diving on the schools. This is a good way to get in the right area of shallow fish at Odell and Cresent.

Up at Paulina the majority of kokes i've seen feeding on the surface are on the small side.

The excrement coming out of the fish I caught Sunday was black. There was still a hatch coming off the lake which the swallows were feeding on. The little bugs were kind of grey in color. My question was do Kokanee eat bugs?

Yes they do.....I was fishing a lake recently and noticed a group of Seagulls slurping something off the surface out from where I was trolling. Upon moving out there to investigate I noticed there were many Chironomid casings floating around. Along with this I starting marking fish and caught a few. When I cleaned the fish later that day the stomachs were full of them. These were Kokes in the 14-16" range.
