A very long time ago when I was just a kid, an old man told me that the secret to a good day of fishing, "Was having the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." Looks like I just had a good day of fishing. I'll get them next weekend. When they are BIGGER. Actually caught one little kokanee but not big enough for dinner. Good thing Safeway was open.

January 1

Yes, I will give it a try on January 1st. If the roads are icy on that morning I won't be going. It is not supposed to freeze tonight so I will be towing to Speelyai in the morning, 12/17/11.

Richard, depending on if there is snow up at the hideaway (on top) we might have to go to SP to launch. Guess we will wait and see what the weather guy says when the time comes..

Merwin update

Maybe I should change my name to One Fish. It was a beautiful sunny day on Merwin. I talked to one other guy at Speelyai when I came in about 1:00 PM and he also caught one Kokanee. I did not see very many on the Fish Finder this time out but what I did see was 30 plus feet deep. I was only on the upper part of the lake. Maybe I will try the lower part next weekend. Any suggestions or tips? Has anyone ever used a side planer to fish them on the surface this time of year? I know that you will rarely if ever see surface fish on the finder.:confused:

Had the opportunity to fish Merwin for the first time this past April; what a great lake! I just wish it was closer. I've got cabin fever as well and may have to give American a shot on the 1st

Cabin Fever!

With the weather being as warm as it has I am thinking of giving Merwin a try on Monday.

I see that the water is 8 feet below full pool, but it was only 3 feet yesterday. If the water level is at 5 or less I am going first think Monday morning.

I need to get out and do something and plus run the motors a bit.

Cheers!

Kokonuts, Wild Child and I will be heading out from LMCH 1-1-12 sometime shortly after daylight, we should be somewhere on the upper end of the lake.

Went to Merwin this morning Windy Windy Windy did not launch. May try tomorrow if weather allows.

MudinChev, That must have been you that I spoke with on the Lake. Did you have any luck? I got skunked. I could not hold a heading while trolling. The wind would just whip me around to what ever direction it wanted to. I tried a bobber for a little while in Speelyai Bay before giving up. Then I met Calcan at SP Bay. (Thanks Calcan for helping me get my boat tied to the dock) You are right. Windy, Windy, Windy and it is not worth fighting it in that weather. I stayed for about another half of a hour after you left and the wind got worse. Good luck if you try tomorrow.

That was us!! It was an adventure to say the least!! We stuck it out until about 2pm. Definitely not for the faint at heart out there today, I kind of felt like the newest episode of deadliest catch taking waves over the bow. We stayed more for the bragging rights just to say we did it, "fished new years day", lost some gear in the prop, for the most part fishing was terrible but it was still fun. I will let Shawn (Wild Child) tell the rest of the story.

I think I fall under the Faint at Heart category. When the waves started coming over my bow thats when I decided to get back to the bay. I don't like the Lake on the inside of my boat. Just doesn't seem right unless it's dripping off of a fish. Wild Child, I can't wait to read the rest of your story. It was nice to meet you all. Ron

There would have been no way to fish with just one person in the boat, it was all i could do to hold course most of the day, and we spent most of it tucked into coves where it wasn't so bad. If it hadn't been for the diehard 9 year old in the boat that had been looking forward to the trip for weeks (you'd have to know him to understand that diehard is even an understatement) I wouldn't have stayed either, we lost more gear yesterday than I did all last year. I am glad I'm not working today because I'm still recovering
