I need some advice, I may have an opportunity to transfer to either Valdez or Kenai Alaska with my present job. Am I crazy for wanting to do it or should I look at how far away from family I would be with both parents not getting any younger. Those that I talk to keep telling me Alaska only has two seasons, winter and cold. I keep thinking it has two seasons also, when the salmon run and when they don't. Another thing to consider is how much I can sell my house now compared to what it is actually worth. All things considered should I do it or should I stay, what would you do.

The summer is beautiful when I went. And if you are transferring within your company, I assume you might be eligible for a hardship transfer back should your parents take ill. I would do it.

I don't know if you are a religious person, but thats a start put it his hands and step back

I can say without a doubt that he'll have some religious experiences in Alaska. But getting the Lord's blessing to do it is a smart way to start.

When I brought it up to my wife I told her "God has givin us our wish and its time to move to Alaska". She polity told me " we must have diffrent Gods because mine said no way". I actually believe that it may be a dream and her god is right after talking with a realtor on selling my house.

I have spent a week up in the Kenai Peninsula. As a beauti to our great country, its a wonder. Unfortunately a week does not give the full insight of Alaska, I was a vacationer up there for the fishing and missed out on a lot of the scenic side of Alaska. I have talked with many current military and former military that have spent time there as residence and love it when the fishing season gets going. They would talk how great the fishing is but also would say they would loose track of time because of long daylight hours. On the hand, those daylight hours had an equal & opposite in the form of night time hours but in the winter. Most that have relocated to the lower 48, loved Alaska but would prefer to visit as a vacation site when weather was warmer. Some stay and make a life there.

Alaska is a big decision and sometimes I wish I could have had that decision to make earlier in my life. Now with the rising cost of fuel, the economy is going to soar everytime you go into a supermarket. For fishing, its easy to think about those big fish. For a more permanent life-Good luck on what you decide. BTW, even today I wouldn't mind living there for a couple of years but I would want to be coming back here. I've grown to love living in Utah. flageagle If you go, we'll be looking for those posts of the fishing you do and kokanee's big brother.

Yeah...if your wife is not on board, it's not going to be fun dragging her up there. I don't know if you are aware, but Alaska has tough winters...not just from the cold, but being in the dark most of the 24 hour day. This wreaks havoc with many people. That's why Alaska has a huge alcoholism problem. Many people leave Alaska in the dark winter months and go to Hawaii or Florida until spring.
