Hot boat test

Can I anyone help me? I want to test my boat for electircal leakage to see if my baot is a HOT BOAT. I know you hook one end to the negative side of the battery the other to the DR cable. I went to home depot and got a 7 function multi tester. Now my question the tester has all kinds of knobs and dials ,3 holes to connect the tester. How do I set up the tester so I can make the test?

You will be measuring voltage, so ignore the amps, ohms or other settings.

The volt meter has a common side for AC, DC, OHM to connect the wires in. Black lead in to common ground slot and red lead into AC, DC, OHM slot. Analog & digital meter connections are the same. Your boat will measure 12V DC power just as an auto with ignition off, and 13-14V with engine running. Set your meter dial(analog) on 50VDC. Smaller scale(on analog meter) will peg meter needle and not give a true reading unless your reading a digital scale. Digital has one setting for VDC. Follow directions according to link Silver Bullets posted. Multi function meters are fuse protected in case you measure AC power and forget to put setting on VAC. The OHM setting is good to check continuity on wires from point A to point B be with power disconnected, troubleshooting a short, or checking resistance in circuitry. Always keep in mind of the type of power source you are dealing with when using your meter. Be safe.....
