I believe that this change may be penny wise and dollar foolish! First, how does tha hatchery know that they will have enough fish for their purpose until they actually return? Increasing the limit may draw large crowds and too many fish may be caught. Second and most important is that extending the ten fish limit thru November may very well impact next year's fishery. I end my fishing at Merwin as soon as I start catching two or more next year's fish. This is usually by mid September. Encouraging people to catch next year's fish when they are 10-11 inches is jst plain foolish. Next March they will be 13 and up. I sure hope that the limit goes back to five and stays there all spring. If not there may not be much of a summer fishery.

You do have a point, but the best thing to do is stop in at the hatchery and talk with them.

I talked with them a few months ago and they said they had more than enough, I've even heard that the fish are spawing on top of each other and they destroy thousands of eggs allready laid.
I would like to see them keep a better control of the #'s in Merwin so they dont overpopulate like Yale & several other lakes and end up with a lake full of small 10" fish.

I'll try & get by the hatchery this weekend to find out more!

Should be interesting - the chance to fish with two rods will be fun the lake's regulars. That coupled with the 10 fish limit will allow you to experiment and test various presentations.

Something that you regulars may want to keep on your radar is the potential impacts on the resident trout and kokanee programs as anadromous fish re-introduced into Merwin. The hatchery plan that is part of the 2004 settlement agree calls for the introduction of anadromous fishing into Merwin in year 12 of the agreement (2016). At that time the plan calls for an evaluation of the resident rainbow and kokanee plans for adjustments need for success of the anadormous program.

There has been a noticeable increase in the amount of people fishing Merwin this week. Unfortunately some of these johnny come lately yahoos have no manners.

Pretty mellow Sunday and Monday, not many anglers out there, maybe 8-9 boats today, a dozen or so yesterday. Btw of 24 fish caught 5 were female for us.

I was out last Sun. with my buddy's Scott & Shawn (Team Wild Child) and we released 2 or 3 that were allready turned red and most of the fish we caught showed signs of Pink & Red getting ready to spawn. We were fishing in front of Speelyai & going west for about 1/4 mile at 45-60 feet deep.
I think the season is just about over.

yes, although we caught about half that weren't in their spawning colors yet. In any case, the flesh looked excellent on all of them. Going into brine as I type. thumbsup

We fished Yale last Saturday, they have raised the limit of 16 fish per person to 32. Fish have bulked up and eat extremely well. We caught 38 fish in three hours of fishing. Silver ford fender with prizm tape in center, 4 ounce weight. red with silver blade wedding ring, tie it long. Out 100 feet on counter, 56 pulls. Get up there and help thin them out, kids will have a blast. Ok so will the adults. Tried other set ups but this old proven method was hot. Silver hooker.

Where did you get the information about the limit at Yale being raised to 32? I just checked the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife web site and there are no emergency regulation changes for Yale.

The lady who runs the park off 503, main launch. Talked with other people that afternoon had 96 fish in boat. They are raising limit to thin out population. No, I didn't check regulations, but I will take her word for it. She and her husband are up there all summer, I don't believe she would give us false information. When we arrive at pay station she wanted us to be aware of the limit increase. They may have not updated website.

Kokecatcher, OOPS, Checked fish and game regulations and you are correct. However, fish and game should consider this to thin out population. Also, people who are hosting parks should be aware of regulations and give visitors proper information. Thanks for the correction, will be up there tomorrow stocking smoker and freezer for the winter. Just a word for those that think raising the limit at Merwin is a bad idea. Check out the stream in late September early October by the hatchery at Speliya bay,and witness first hand the numbers of Kokes this reservoir produces.
