Hello all. I am new to forum, and new to Kokanee fishing. All I have is a little 14' flat bottom boat. I am wondering is there is any good areas on the gorge to try for kokes? I know that the weather can get bad fast, and it wouldn't take much to sink my boat.

Thanks in advance.

Seth

If I had your boat, I'd stay very close to the launches. Out of Lucerne, there is great Rainbow fishing close to shore in Linwood Bay. For Kokes, launch at Anvil Draw and fish right out in front. Launch at Buckboard and also stay right out in front of the marina. These are by no means the best places but places you can get into fish nonetheless. And being close to launches also increases your chances of getting quick help in the event of an emergency. I highly advise you invest in a handheld vhf radio if you don't already have one.

I personally wouldn't put that boat on the Gorge. The weather can swamp you fast, almost as fast as the guys who insist on flying bye you full throttle 50 ft away.

Both of the above two comments are dead on. I would launch at Bringers crossing/ Squaw hollow. Easy access to some great koke fishing and easy off and on. I would only fish in the early morning when there is less chance of the wind coming up and the power squadron is not out. I would stay away from Buckboard and Lucerne. To much other boat action in there to cause you some grief.

+4 Even for bigger boats that caught in the wind can push a boat where you don't want it to go. I've been out there on 4-6' swells.

Regardless of where you put in at, don't get to far away from shore. Like others have said ,the wind can come up in a hurry at the gorge, and the last place you want to be is in the middle of the lake when that happens. If you were to put in a squaw hollow, and stayed on the west side against the cliffs, you would have a good chance of catching some kokes early in the morning. Having a flat bottom boat would work against you ,if you where caught in a wind storm, and was trying to get back to shore. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I would look for even more protection and just launch and fish in the Canyon region near the dam. Cedar Springs Marina and Mustang Ridge are worth considering and the Koke fishing has been good near those launches. The steep terrain of this area also gives you some accessible hiding spots in the event the weather pops-up. Rough weather has been almost a daily occurrence up here for the last several weeks too.

Good luck! Ryno
