Would like to hear from some of the Kokanee GUIDES from around the Country post up tell us about your services and what lakes you guide on

I've been thinking about getting my License to guide for kokanee, but I was thinking about doing a How to Catch Kokanee class on my boat along with catching a boat load of fish. I would like to know how are Guides doing these days or if anyone would be interested in a Class & Fishing trip & what is the going rate?

I would have to say that you already have an impressive resume!

I'm in the process of renewing my Ca. guides license, #11032. I got my feet wet a few years back and I learned a lot from that expierence. Now with a much nicer boat I thought I'd give it another try. The economy will of course play a big part in my decision. Unfortunalty, someone took my domain name for my web site but I'll find a way around it since all of logo's and cards already have that name. No big deal right now. Here is what I learned from my past expierence after talking with the established veteran guides,

Make sure to cross every I & T. What I mean is, if ANY permits are required for differenct bodies of water, get them!!! It never sits well with the other guides who are in compliance and you are not. Do your home work!!! This did effect me back in the day because I was not properly informed. It generaly takes more than a guides license, bond and insurance. Get the facts and comply.

This I never did but does happen and it's never ever good. NEVER under cut the other guides just to get business. Stay competive but don't cut throats. It's understandable that some guides can offer trips at a lower rate because of their overhead, less distance to travel, etc.. Stick to your advertized rate and only give discounts for the obvious things, senior, disabled, military or corperate gigs.
Try to establish a good relationship with the other guides. This is very important and can help greatly. If your new to the game, be up front with the veteran guides and let them know just who you are and what your plans are. No one likes "hacks" on their home lakes. Be up front & honest always. Never talk bad about another guide. It will get back to them and is always trouble. This will help not only as far a unneeded stress but you just might be able work something out between the other guides to get more trips sent your way. Do the same for them.
Make sure to do ALL your home work and leave nothing to chance. If you've done everything and are in complete compliance but still have issues with other guides, and it will happen, do your thing and don't sweat the small stuff. Things usualy work themselves out.
As soon as I get my act together, I'll post just who I am, my qualifictions, expierence, accomplishments, etc...

Hope this helps a litttle.

Mark

I deal with a lot of guides in my line of work a lot and Mr D and your right on the money don't burn any bridges behind you. There is very few full time guides, everyone today if they have a boat and a pole is a guide its not easy. The ecomony is very bad. I think its a good idea guides on the high lakes what I can see they think there is only one no two fish in Oregon. Salmon and Sturgeon. Good luck
