Hi everyone...I'm new to the site and also new to koke fishing. I really want to hit causey this year and give er' a go...Problem is I don't know the first thing about fishing for kokanee. I have a boat but I will more than likely be fishing from my toon so trolling (since I don't have a trolling motor) is out of the question. So I guess my first question is; Is it possible to fish koke from a pontoon while not trolling? If so your help on how to do this would be very appreciated! Second question is what to use for bait? (you may have to dumb it up a little since I've only got into fishing just in the last couple years and don't know all the lingo of all different baits/lures.) Thanks a bunch for any help!

Does your toon have a fish finder? When the fish are schooled up, you could probably jig the schools when you find them on your graph. Small, lead jigs tipped with Shoepeg Corn would be the lure/bait you'd likely want to employ.

There is certainly tons of Kokanee information here. Welcome to the boards.

Welcome CStoon. thumbsup I'm sure you know Causey doesn't have a boat ramp. Thats the only way I could get my boat on the water. Small boats that are carried to water is what I've seen. I'm not sure of the reg's for having motors and if its wakeless speed only. Like SuperD says, there is alot of info here on this forum. Also, there is the Meet,Greet, & Eat get together July 10 at Buckboard, Wyoming, Flaming Gorge for all members. You can read about it under the events board. Food, prizes, and meeting people is what its about. Come on up even if its for the day. It'll be fun.

Welcome Aboard - Since you're new to fishing, you'll want (need) to read the fishing proclamation on special regulations for each body of water you plan to fish. It seems the Utah Fish & Game like to change the rules often. Any use of any kind of kernel corn is illegal in Utah! Many types of scents come in handy. Read through the tips on ice fishing in this forum and you'll get a sense of what you're in for. Causey Reservoir will be a tough place to learn to catch kokanee and as SuperD already stated, you'll need a fish finder to locate the schools.

I'll be up there this year after work trying to locate them as well in a green, Old Towne canoe. Give me a shout if I happen to paddle by.

If you can rig a fishfinder on your pontoon, and can paddle to where they are, you can jig very effectively for kokanees.
We have one lake here, dont even need a fishfinder, there will be 10-30 boats piled up, about 3 minutes of paddling a canoe, anchor up and nail 'em!
Once you learn the lake, they are very predictable and can be found in the same place the same time each year.

Causey used to be my stomping grounds when i fished from a raft and my 14ft boat. i nolonger have them so i have been absent from causey for a couple years but have caught 100's of kokes from there in a boat trolling. jigging for them from a tube or toon? id pm kokehead i know he has done well for them jigging open water

I've fished for kokes a couple times from my toon... http://www.modells.com/largeImage/i...eg.net/graphics/product_images/p1469998dt.jpg

It's alot easier out of a regular boat, but it can be done. On my toon I have a 30lb thrust Minn Kota for getting to a jigging area. I mounted a Fishin' Buddy 2201 fish finder for locating the fish (made a holder useing pvc pipe, a couple hose clamps, and a strap.) Carry enough anchor line to stay over a school and vertical jig either targeting suspended fish, or right off the bottom, depending where they show on the sonar. Get small lead jigs in the 1/4. 1/2, and 3/4 oz size. Another option for you is to jig while drifting out in open water. Use either white Shoepeg corn, or just smear some Pro-Cure gel scent on the lure. Lift and lower the jig, most hits occur while the jig is falling. Set the hook when you feel resistance...braided line with a short section of mono leader helps with detecting the bite and getting a good hook-set. You'll have to carry a small cooler and ice em down asap.thumbsup
