Yet another report to catch up on from last weekend. Some would say you are crazy to go fishing on a holiday weekend but that's what we did on Labor Day Weekend. We always wait until Sunday when the lake lice are late risers due to their general over consumption from the previous nights.
So only 10 boats were brave enough to take on the growing crowds of Vampires from the deep. And deep they were as the biting crowds were from 75 to 95 feet enjoying the darkness and 54 degree water. We got a nice early start, you gotta love a family that's all willing to leave at 4AM! It didn't take long before we scored first blood with a King and then a nice pink Kokanee to get things started. It was lots of fun action throughout the morning with always something going on with the highlight being a delayed triple that required two nets to complete. In the end we kept 11 nice Kokes from 16.5 to 18.5 inches and along with a few that escaped to see another day and the Kings it was a great day at Berryessa. Since we had enough fish in the cooler we bailed for some tubing and swimming.
The fish came on a lot of different Radical Glo Hoochi Mama combos, Hoochies and Apex's but the main killer was the purple / pink Assassin. Even though the fish look pretty mature the meat was very good... as per the photo at the end. Eventually I'll produce some video when time permits as we had some wild moments above and below the water. So on with the picture show...
Vampire Fishing requires an early start....my better half still thinks I am Kokanee Crazy... confirmed!
The Sun begins to rise... for a beautiful morning....signaling the vampires to go deep!
The Vampires are clearly congregating deep to get away from the sun...
First Vampire to the boat....what a slug!
