Hi all,

I'm new to the forum this year and have really enjoyed the posts and appreciate the information. I've been fishing Flaming Gorge for about two seasons and having great success on Kokes. I've seen the pics and heard the stories of big lake trout. Catching lake trout down there has been pretty easy, but I haven't clued into anything over 7 pounds.

Anyone have any good tips for big lakers?

Thanks!

I have a tip...dont even waste your time. Just go koke fishing, they fight better, taste great, are easy to catch, and there's not 4 hours of nothing between fish. I caught an 18 here on Jackson lake last week and it was in the net in less than a minute from 65 feet... Lame !! If that was an 18 lb brown or steelhead or carp or anything with fins it would have fought better. Lake trout are by far the WORST fighting fish in fresh water...there I said it ! Every fishermen on this board knows when they have a lake trout on their koke tackle, why ?, because they don't fight like a koke. And by the way I fish for. Lake trout about 90 percent of my fishing time !!!

101welcomw freshie 101welcomw to the boards. I have to agree with jacksonlaker. I get better fights from rainbows. A carp will excite you. tooexcited I catch enough pups at the Gorge but they need some viagra or cialis or something to get fiesty. I caught an 18lb laker at Bear L and it didn't put up much of a fight. It took about 20mins to boat it only because I'm using lite koke gear and didn't want to break the line or snap a rod. But its a different treat using lite gear. If your out for lakers, try the jigging method with large white tube type jigs. The lakers start stacking up in Linwood Bay in September and you can always find the jiggers.

First off welcome, Second I would pay for a guide if even for one trip, you will learn more in one day with them than you will in a year of doing it yourself. Third dont learn to fish for them! They will over take your life if you let them. I HATE the damn things but I just cant stop fishing for them, as for the lack of fight, I have never had a thirty pounder not give me a run for my money, and god for the head shakes! Nothing like it! Hope this helps.

I've been fishing lake trout for almost 40 years (Personal best of a 40lb out of Lake Michigan)... So I'm already stuck. I accidentally saw my mother-in-law naked once and can't get rid of that vision either.... Guess that's why we drink.

I usually only consider fishing lakers on the Gorge after getting a limit of Kokes. I was hoping to get clued into some local bigger fish areas and some popular baits.

Ok so you all ready have the bug. If I was trolling I would be dragging RMT Rainbow trout or Mai-tai spoons. (might want to up size the hooks) If jigging I like light or dark jigs, the fish will let you know. Starting places would be Swim, Antelope, or Linwood. There is no magic lure or water depth.

Cant beat time on the water.

Hey JL,

Given your moniker, not hard to figure where you fish most. I don't know much about fishing Jackson. What else is available?

Ever fish Bear Lake in Utah/Idaho. Love those huge native cutts. Lakers are not huge, but it's a beautiful place to fish and a scenic drive to get there. Of course the Tetons are not a bad backdrop either ;-)

See you on the water. Heading to the Gorge today for a few days.
