I fish long line vs down-rigger and it was a pain to always be counting pulls to get the lure to a given depth. Since I didn't want to go to leaded-line, I checked to see what else was available and came up with Tufline XP indicator line in 30# test. ( Braided line marked each 10') The test wasn't needed, but it matched the diameter of the mono I'd been using and has been nothing but great. When I fish two rods, I sometimes fish two different lengths of line to find the fish and in the past it was a mental mess trying to remember how much line was out on each rod; no more!

I just loaded the spinning reels with the Tufline XP indicator to get to the desired depth while targeting suspended fish jigging...can hardly wait to try it out! For trolling I use levelwind line counter reels with mono.

Ive been know to count out 100 pulls and mark the line with a little piece of masking tape wrapped around it. I've had the tape last a few trips too. I tried those clamp on line counters and they worked all right, but could never trust them unless I watched them the whole time.

Old School

Old School, a trick that my father taught me was to borrow some of my mom's nail polish when she wasn't looking and paint up the line in increments. I suppose you could paint one dot for every ten feet, so 3 dots would be 30ft. When you reach a certain point I guess you could use spacing to add to the dimensions. So, _ ... or . ...would = 80ft. It ended up being too much hassle to steal her nail polish away so he finally bought a reel with a line counter. I still resort to the two foot pull method since I am too lazy to paint up my lines and too fearful of my wife's wrath over her nail polish, and I just won't go to the line counter reels because no one seems to make them with a left hand crank.

SilverBullets, I look forward to hearing how you like this stuff. Even though I'm not a huge fan of fishing down deep with a jig I've often thought about buying some of the Fireline that changes color every 5 feet to do that very thing. That and to help me when I am trolling. The only thing that has held me back so far is the fact that I haven't found it in the lighter line weights. I have had bad experience when using braided line in too heavy of weight on a spin reel and don't want any repeats. What weight did you get your line in? Please let me know how well you like it. I just figured that I would go to it when I need to replace the line on my bait caster.

I ended up getting the 20lb color metered braid. I tried a paint pen on regular braid last year to mark a certain distance but it came off after a couple trips. Here's a list of the weights available...

I still look forward to hearing how you like this stuff. I tried 14lbs and it was too much for my patience but I was also doing it sort of at the last moment also. I had forgotten one of the important things about this line is to cinch down an anchor of mono first or otherwise the spool will slip on the arbor. That was probably the only real problem but I've been cautious about going heavier again as a result. I hope you don't mind being my guinea pig on this. :)

I use a permanent marker to mark my line I mark 40' with red which is usually what I run behind the boat on the rigger and then out to 100' every 10 ' with black if I want to flat line. This will last about 3 trips before I have to redo it.

So far I've been happy with my Tufline XP Indicator line. I don't have to concentrate on pulls and it is easy to add or subtract the amount of line I have out if I decide to vary my depth.

marking depth

One way that works Ok is to use green dental floss.
You have to pre-tie it using 2 wraps of it around the line at pre-set depths but it does stay put. I usually just count reel strokes back and forth on my level wind. I always lose count or get distracted and have to start over or guess though.

After a couple trips jigging with the Tufline XP Indicator it does help getting down to suspended fish. I use a 10' section of 6lb mono for leader so to get down to the 50' level I just let out 4 colors of braid and I'm there. The braid goes from red to green to yellow then back to red. The only complaint I have is it's hard to see the color difference between the green and yellow as the line is being let out (the red stands out more and is easy to see where it begins and ends.) Since my target depth where I fish while going after suspended kokes is between the 40 and 50 foot level all I have to do is let out until the 2nd red just hits the water to get to 40' or let the 2nd red disappear under water to get to 50'. The braid I went with is 20lb (thickness of 6lb mono) but when I change it out I think I'll probably go with the 40lb (thickness of 10lb mono) so I can see it better with my old eyes.
