Matzou sickle vs. gama octopus hooks

The only place I have been able to find them is at Kmart here in Auburn. I have looked everywhere for just the hooks and can't find. The ones I have found are #4 & #6 with a 18" snell already done.

Time for a follow up. All you that tried the sickle hooks, still with them or back to octopus?

I tried them but did not really notice a difference in my landing rate. I do like that you can get them in bulk and cheaper.

I was not using Octopus, but was using splitshot/dropshot hooks, usually from Mustad as they have a bigger eye than the Gammys.

This years hooks were Matzou sickles for me (Cheaper) easy to tie and hooked well for me last year, but I have a lot of gammies as well. TL

Both sickle and octopus worked about the same. I will continue to use whichever I can get the cheapest. Kokaneetackle.com has both Gami octopus and Mazou sickle if you are looking. Both brands are razor sharp and hold a point well.

I use the sickle hooks on a regular basis. They are less expensive to boot! Or used to be anyway. Here is a good source

Just bought my first pack and tied a dozen leaders. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE tying those hooks. Nice big eye holes for large pound test leader material and the shank lengths are easy on the fingers.

Do a search for Captain Hooks for the Matzuo Sickle's. Cheapest place I've found them, by far. Red #4's seem hard to come by at the moment, however.

Guys,
Try using the Gamakatsu Split Shot/Drop Shot hooks. They come in both black and red, I use the red. They have a nice gap, and a long tine hook point, with a pronounced hook bend at the bottom to lock the fish in place, plus there forged if your worried about strength. I'm thinking there not as thick as the Matzuo's, and not as heavy.
Good Luck Out There,
Winterun

AS i've said before, the superior hook (imo)is the tru-turn hook, made in the U.S.A., patented cam action works quite well and the thiness of the hook prevents the hook from creating a large hole in the mouth.Nice long shaft(vs. small length on drop shot hooks). For photo read last post(another hog)in non-Koke fishing in WA. and check out the hook. Cabelas's carries them. Bob R

I switched off the octopus to dropshot hooks a couple years and have not looked back. As far as sickle hooks are concerned I started with them last year and so far so good. My initial impression is that they are better than octopus (hook to landing ratio) but not quite as good as dropshots for me. My dropshots have been both mustad and gami depending on what was available when I went to bi-mart. I run #2 on most hoochies and #4 on most spinners and apexes.
