Measuring temp at depth ?

Kokanee Fishing Forums

Help Support Kokanee Fishing Forums:

I use the Koch temperature gauge.... it gives a digital read out down to 100 feet in 5 foot increments. I just lower it down on the downrigger ball, bring it back up, and press the button.

got any pic of that?

I can't find a link for it. I got it from Cabela's a few years back and Kokaneemart used to carry them, but they aren't listed anymore. You might contact Ric and see if he knows where to get them. The unit is the size of a credit card and about 1/2" thick. It sold for around $50.

That sounds what I'm looking for . I googled Koch Thermometers and didn't see what I was looking for , but have hundreds listed .
I inquired by E mail. I'll keep you posted .

This is from "Kokanee University" off the FishWithGary website:

Determining where that ideal temperature is can be trial and error if you are unable to measure it directly. There are a few reliable devices available that you can use such as the Fish Hawk model 840. Sadly, Koch is no longer importing the inexpensive digital temperature device. Since kokanee have a very elongated air bladder, you can use your fishfinder to determine their approximate depth. Kokanee will show a bright orange with a color fishfinder. Take an average depth of the images, and have that as your initial target depth. Set your presentation within five feet top and bottom of that target depth. If the fish that hit your presentation are smaller than what is generally being caught, lower your target by five feet. Continue this process until you are zoned in.

An inquiry to Cabelas returned this reply ,

Hello Dick:

Thanks for your interest in our ClineFinder!

ClineFinders are available in Fahrenheit models and Celsius models. The F models hold 50 ft. of cable with depth marked at 2 foot intervals; Celsius models contain 15 meters of cable, marked at half meter intervals.

Each retails at $159.95 and this month, we are offering free shipping via UPS Ground with your purchase.

You may order via e-mail and please include a daytime phone number. We will call you for credit card payment. We are in the process of upgrading our web site to include a store for ease of purchasing.

Let me know what you would like to do.

Cheers,

If I don't find anything better , I plan to buy one .

The FishHawk Thermotroll 840 is what I have and has been superseded with the FishHawk X4 - a sleeker more condensed and more modern unit but the same exact features. You can learn a lot with these devices but they are not cheap either. In perticular if you fish lakes with thermoclines in the heat of the summer they are really helpful. Has a lake really turned over in the fall? This will tell you if it has happened by reading the gradients in real time as you lower the down-rigger ball.

Cabelas Temp Gauge (discontinued)

Cabelas discontinued theirs two years ago, but you might still be able to locate one in their in-store bargin cave. Originally this was marketed years ago as a DTM40, also later discontinued.

Go really old school

About 35 years ago I had a remote thermometer that would read temp at depth. Anyone know something worn similar ?

Dick

In 78 I got a LOWRANCE FISH-N-TEMP .It worked great for years.Unfortunately it died with a sickening crunch on my hardwood floor. Lowrance no longer sells or repairs them, but I did find a couple on E BAY.One was a little worn but works great ,the other was new in the box. These units are slightly unwieldly but work great and are very accurate.I work in an environmental lab and have checked them against lab thermometers. They are dead on the money when calibrated annually.Hard to get,but cheaper than a Fish Hawk

It is amazing that these have vanished from the market. They seem like such a simple item, a probe/sensor, wire and a reader. Seems like something you could put together from a visit to radio shack.

Hi,

This is Ric from Kokaneemart. As was stated by FishWithGary, the Koch unit is no longer made and we can't get them. I wish we could as they were a good selling item and worked well.

For those of you who have a Koch unit.....take good care of it. I replace the battery every year, carefully. It is an excellent and reliable unit. If you have one, take good care of it, it will serve you well.

I have the same unit, thanks FishWithGary! I don't believe the licensing has been renewed for Mfg.

Just don't drop them down below 100'. They implode.

I ordered MinKota Fishermans Air and temp meter from Amazon. It only goes to 25 ft. I have an electronic guru type friend that is going to try to add wire length to 50 ft. I seldom have to fish deeper , the water is so cold in Navajo. The river water comes out of the Dam in the mid 30s in the hotest summer months . We also talked about adding a pressure sensor that would tell the depth on the face of the meter. At first I plan to attach it to the downrigger weight and measure temp and depth that way .
I'll report on progress .

Jzell, can you tell me what battery to replace in my Koch? I stupidly threw the old one out thinking it was a common size such as a 2032 coin battery. when I placed that size in it, it flashed on for one second and was gone. There is a light magenta print inside that reads 2232, but darned if I can find a coin battery with that number. Radio shack did not list it and I've had no luck on Google to find a coin battery of 2232.

Welcome to KFF Randy! I have my Koch unit right here and the battery is a Lithium CR2032 (my unit is the Koch 90000) The instructions say you can order a battery replacement kit (battery and O-ring) Make sure when replacing the battery that it gets installed positive end up.
