Ohhhhh. Been there and done that... Well at least some fish were caught. Thanks for the report! Pull started a 70hp Evinrude one time and I tell you that was treat. LOL

Merlin gets big really fast when the wind comes up. Without power it could be a slow float to the dam and long walk back to the truck.

Merwin 4/26/13

100_0437.jpg100_0439.jpgToday was a wonderful morning at Merwin for me. It started of slow. The gate keeper was ten minutes late and the full moon was so bright that you could almost read a paper. As I left the dock about 0545 two other rigs arrived. I headed east and soon found myself right in the middle of a boil. Fish were everywhere! I got my first line out at 0555 and before I could set the second rod I had a kokanee in the boat. I got both rods out and the first rod had another fish. I reset the first rod and brought in the second rod to change gear. I got the second rod half out and the first rod went off. When that fish was half way in the second rod started moving in the boat. I had a double. I got both and now had four fish. The time was 0615. Fifteen minutes later the fifth fish was in the boat. I had struck the mother lode! Every now and then everything comes together: right place, right time, right gear and bait, right depth and speed. All fish were caught flatline at 100ft. Three on a flo. orange wedding ring with a 1.0 silver scale smile blade behind a silver sling blade and two on a flo. orange wedding ring with a #2 hammered nickle Indiana blade behind a UV sling blade. I am surprised how large the fish are for this time of year. The fish measured 13, 13 3/4, 14, 14 1/2, 141/2. They were very fat. I left Speelyai about 0745. There were 17-18 rigs in the lot with more arriving. As a side note, I spoke with the gate keeper and he said they may open Cresap tomorrow. The logging project is scheduled to be completed today.

That's Great to hear! Way to go!. I am planning a trip to Merwin next Sat! I have never been there but its time I try it. Obviously its best to go before dawn! I will be using a 16 ft Lund with a 25 horse and a 3.5 horse for trolling, 3 people, 3 lines. I will be fishing the top with orange mini houchie and a orange spinglo and corn. Where is the best place to go? Again keep in mind I have never been there and don't even know where the launch is.

Fished Saturday 4/27. Good day, went 14 for 24. Everything we used worked. 100 feet long lined. Middle of the lake is where we found the biters. At one time we had 4 fish on at the same time!

Lou, thanks for posting the maps up. Good to print and study.

Another great source requires spending around $10 for the Navionics smart phone app. I have it on my android phone and with the built in GPS, it works great on Merwin/Yale/Swift even though there is no cell reception, as maps are pre-cached. I have GPS on my Lowrance, but I run the smartphone app and that lets me run full screen for the fishfinder.

xplorz, just curious as to what effect running the app has on the phone battery? I ask because last week I was turkey hunting and my son was using a Google Earth app on his iPhone; it worked great showing us where we were as we explored some new State and Tmber lands; however, the continuous downloading of data did drain the battery qute a bit. Hello everyone, I was onkokonuts boat during the veteran's fishing day at Riffe Lake the other week. I am planning on coming down to fish Lake Merwin next Sat and Sunday. Can you please give me some advice so that I have the best chances of catching. I have never been to merwin and don't even know where the launch is but I am sure I can find it. I need to know what is the best set up to use, where on the lake is the best spots, and what times are best for bites. I will be using a Lund Aluminum 16.5 ft with a 25hp and a 3.5 hp. I don't have any downriggers so I will be top fish trolling. Any advice possible would be great! Please PM me.

The Navionics app allows you to download the maps ahead of time and you do not need any cell reception to use to the app once you have the maps. I have all of Oregon and Washington in mine, not taking up much room on the sd card. Plus, on the boat I can use a car charger if I needed it, but I bought the extended battery option on my phone.

Merwin 4/30

Another great morning. The fish were still on the surface. I started with a double catching both. In less than forty minutes I had my five and lost two. Like last Friday all hits were flat line 100ft. I continue to use sling blades and flo. orange wedding rings. Fishing is still best in the eastern part of the lake. As it heats up I expect this to change. My fish today were a little bit smaller that last Friday. They were all 13 1/4 to 13 3/4. I spoke with the gate keeper again this morning. He said the plan is now to open Cresap on Thursday, May 2.

Way to go! Seems like the Kokanee is on fire right now. Almost everyone I know is making a killing out on Merwin. I can't wait to get on the lake this up coming weekend.

Well, I lost the magic. I fished Wednesday for six hours. I caught eight kookanee and a squaw fish. All my hits were before 0915. Catfish got the first ten fish limit. He was done around 0900. I talked to a lot of fisherman. You had to be at the right spot at the right time to do well. A guide boat came in at noon and I over heard one of the four clients say that he had not caught anything! I hope to go next Tuesday maybe I will see you.

Merwin: Sweet day on Merwin yesterday. We ended up with 24 in the net. Released 3 smaller kokes and 3 chubs. Probably had 15 get off near the boat. It was nice to limit out. A006.jpg001.jpg007.jpg009.jpgnything seemed to work. Didn't seem to make any difference where you fished on the lake. Most fish near the surface.

We came in at noon with 28, didn't see any other guide boats out there... Which boat was it?

Wednesday had a great bite early but the bite died a bit when the air went stagnant. Going for 50 tomorrow.....

Ok Everyone, On May 4th my Son and I arrived at the launch at 0520 and all ready there where about thirty people trying to get their boats in the water. I left the bay and dropped in at 0545. Between 0545 and 0900 we already had 9 decent sized in the boat. We must have lost about 8 next to the boat. Caught and lost a few more by 1030 and the bite stopped. The hardest thing was navigating what must have been over 150 boats. We tried until 1230 and caught none. We decided to go towards Yale. We found our self as far as we could go where the river dumps in. What a great sight! Very shallow so be careful. Anyway we dropped anchor and tried to catch the monster Kokanee we can see a few feet below the boat. For the next few hours we went cove to cove bottom fishing for anything. We caught three Browns. Around 5:45 we were down by Merwin Dam and decided to Drop in and troll back East. About 0615 the bite was back! We were landing bout 4 every 15 Min. We left Merwin at 7:30pm. 14 hours total at merwin and we left with 14 Kokanee and all of them were larger than 14in. We also left with 3 browns. What a great day!

Heading up tomorrow with the wife. Any reports on what depth the are at now? Water temp? Just looking to get a little clued in. Been springer fishing, with this weather I would rather b Kokanee fishing. Thanks for any help.

Yimmee, I heard there is a tournament up there on the 11th, so it might be a bit crowded at Speelyai. Cresap is open though... Good luck, I have been too busy to get up there yet, maybe next weekend101juggle101101juggle101
