I have about 50 dollars to spend to get me setup on kokanee fishing. I have a rod and reel (not the best for kokes but it will do) I will need a net though. I was able to order a few pline verticle jigs.

What would you reccomend, with this budget? Thanks.

I would suggest looking Rocky Mountain tackle up on the net. Call them and likely you will be able to talk to Jared. They have some starter kits that will get you some of the basics to get started with. There are other options, but these folks are very accomidating. This is one option.

Are you committing to jigging only or are you going to be trolling at all? We can spend your $50 pretty quick either way but it will help us know where your focus is.

probably a little bit of both. I have a canoe for my boat so far (Gotta get out of debt before I can get a big toy!). I already have ordered the jigs, they are pline, and I got a couple in 1/2 and 3/4 oz. from kokaneetackle.com Not sure if I need anything else for jigging, I've heard some people like the bombs, but looking at them I don't have much confidence in them. Thanks for the reply. Looking at the stuff I was suprised how easy it is to spend $50 on lures, so figured I would get your advice.

Also, check out our advertisers at the top and right side of the page.
Give them a call and let them know where you plan on fishing...they're very knowlegable and will hook ya up! signfishin

laminac,

Being a jigging person myself, I'm with you on the looks of the Buzz Bombs. But I can tell you from first hand experience that they work and work very well. Keep in mind that none of these jigs look anything like the food that kokanee eat. I have my theories as to why jigs work so well but they are only theories and I've yet to get a confession from even one of the koke's I've caught. I usually don't vertical jig, I normally cast my jigs out to rising fish in the spring and work the top 10 to 20 feet in the water column. The one thing I can tell you to invest in that will save you money in the long run is good line. Fishing with jigs is hard on line and I would recommend that if you want to use mono to keep it on the cheap, I would probably go with 8lb line and plan on retying about every 10th fish or so. This will save you a lot of money in jigs over the course of time. The other thing that will cost you lures regularly is if you are using a spin reel that randomly closes the bail in mid-cast. This has happened to me in the past and will not let your lures grow old on your line. For me personally, except in heavy winds or really deep water, I find that 3/4 oz jigs are bigger than I normally want.

I'm not much of an advocate for trolling but, when the conditions call for it, I will resort to whatever it takes to catch the fish. Short of DuPont spinners, of course. I've had my most success with gang trolls and wedding ring lures when trolling, but I've heard many others who swear by dodgers and hoochies. I'm still waiting for my first fish on such a rig but I believe that they bring good success to some. Trolling rigs won't take long to eat up your budget. You might find that you are best to stick with one method and learn it well. This will benefit you in the money department and also, I believe, in the catch department as well. Since you've already bought the jigs, and since it is the cheaper way to go, I'd recommend that if you find that jigging works in the waters that you are going to fish, stick with jigging until your budget grows a little. That is not a knock, I know all too well about the need to keep the cost down low. This is just my opinion about what might benefit you most. Happy fishing, I'd love to hear how you do when you go.

Just my choice if I was spending $50 and put on a desserted island:

3 - 4.5" dodgers @ about $7/ea = $21
4 - hootchies @ $3.50/ea = $14
4 - spinners or weddings rings @ $3.50/ea = $14
Total = $49

Dodgers, 1 - hyperplaid, 1 - pink, 1 - orange
Hootchies: 2 pink, 1 orange & 1 blue or purple
Spinners: same as above

Pink is probably the most popular color. If you were fishing 2 rods and the pink was the hot rod wouldn't you want another one for the other rod? 101idea101 Entering the world of Kokanee fishing automatically associates you with a bunch of tackle whores. We have dozens of every lure in every color, because you can never have too many. If you are anything like the rest of us, the first day you have a hot lure you'll come home and buy a half dozen more. The next trip, you'll have a different hot lure and you'll go buy a half dozen of those. See how it happens? laugh hyst

Instead of hootchies try crappie tubes ,they are cheap and come in lots of colors. For spinners get some blades, clevises and beads( craft stores have beads in volume and variety fairly cheap( If anyone asks say they are for your daughter101ok101). Check out the tackle craft section for lure ideas some of our members make some awesome rigs. Some big spoons make great dodgers and you may get lucky and find them on clearance. It is awesome to catch fish on gear you make and can you can build your tackle arsenal for less money than buying new.But like SuperD said koke fishing is addictive and you can burn 50 real quickly buying lure components101chromefish101

Looks like you are just starting in the kokanee game.... Once the bug set's in $50 isn't going to go very far... I picked up $150 dollars of R & K hoochies and I still don't have enough. This doesn't count hardware, wedding rings, dodgers, jigs, spin & glows, apex, wee-tads, hoochie things, plus don't forget there are about 5 million different ways to rig these up. Different types of blades beads hooks. The different types of combination's are endless, and you'll need more than one of each type. Nothing worse than having that hot lure and only having one in the tackle box.

This is the most expensive sport I've even been involved in.... THANKS DAD

Humdingers by shasta tackle are a very good weapon as well, they have similar size/action/design to the hoochie/tubes although they do not get torn apart after a few fish or the pliers. I have caught fish both trolling and jigging with them. As always trolling you should have a few dodgers to slap them behind. Pink seems to be a top kokanee killer.

You can get more than enough tackle for $50.00 if you get the right stuff right off the bat. A few 4.5 or 6" Dodgers( my choice) and a few packs of RMT hoochies to rig yourself will be a pretty good start.

Throw in some Gamakatsu red octopus hooks in #4 and you'll be set. Think Pink, Pink and then some more pink and you'll have the right colors.

hopefully it will work. I plan on going out to Strawberry this weekend so we shall see how it goes. I'm planning on going to the soldier creek side, I'm not sure if anyone has any suggestions for me... they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all of the help so far. And hopefully my tackle will get here Friday. I think it will since it is Boise to Salt lake and he said it shipped yesterday, otherwise we will only be trying jigging. :)

Pick up a jar of Berkley Power Maggots in pink and a bottle of scent to tip your hooks with. I like the garlic scent. RMT's scent is good too. On the cheap, soak the maggots in a little vanilla extract and maple syrup.

Since SuperD got you into this, and they don't work, I can tell you where he lives. Trouble is catching him at home. whistlersmother
On a more serious note, those are excellent selections. Hope you get into the kokes. The cutts like to play with koke tackle too. ;)
