It was a derby weekend for the HiTechKoke crew. Lots of familiar faces out there as well as this Forums Moderator, MR D who did very well.
I was lucky to have both Jenna and Rachel on this trip which is a rarity these days. The trip started out with a bang / vibration which equated to a flat tire on the Toyota Sequoia whilst towing the boat at 5:00 AM Friday on the bridge incline with no where to pull over. That was more than nerve wracking thinking we were going to get rear ended but we got the maintenance truck hailed through the call box that blocked a lane whilst putting on the spare with their help and a real floor jack. Not a good way to start the trip. Also forgot the spare battery for the camera and the one in there was dead and only good for one picture from the camera. So no video and camera phone pics only this trip. :-(
Fast forward to derby day 1 and fishing was great with no shortage of fish from 30 to 85 feet but we concentrated in the 35 to 50 range. We fished the south end and managed a nice batch of fish early, one of which was 16 inches for Jenna at 24.5 oz. That fish put on a massive aerial that I thought for sure was going to flip the hooks but it stuck and once we had it on the boat I knew her day was complete. Rachel had a nice 15 inch class fish as well and my fish seemed about the same as Rachel's. As it turned out Jenna and Rachel managed 1st and 2nd place on day one... but this is a two day combined weight derby.
Day two was not much different but our overall average was down most of the morning in the south end so we found a nice private cove north and east side and found some bigger fish deeper and near bottom at 60 to 85 feet and they were biting too.
After all was said and done Jenna held on to 1st place and Rachel took 4th so they were pretty excited and made the old man proud of the ladies. It was pretty much an Assassin Spinner and Cotton Candy Hoochie weekend for us along with some orange UL spinners thrown in for good measure A few pics...
My moment to point out a fish was biting...
Rachel with an average Kokanee fish in the 14 inch class
Scenes like this were common on the fishfinder...
Jenna with her derby clincher big fish which was one of the top 3 or 4 biggest fish of the derby in weight.
