I just bought two Okuma cold water left hand retrieve line counter reels for $79.99 they were $110 at Cabelas. They seem like good heavy reels. Anyone got an opinion on what rod they should be paired with.

snakeriverfisher are you using downriggers, jigging or long lining? for that size reel and using downriggers I would use the lamiglas red JJs or the white one, I like the lamiglas rods but as you will see there are many other brands but this is what I use. dfly

I'm going to throw out a vote for a Vances spiral wrap Koke rod for those reels. I think Bduck runs his Okumas on a Vance's rod.

I'm going to use them with down riggers,I wanted them for salmon and kokes, they may be a bit big for kokanee but I think they will be ok

i've had great luck with these rods in the link below (rod model WSCML70-2), i've caught everything from tiny kokanee up to 15lb cats and steelhead on them and they work great, they are just a bit stiff for kokanee under about the 16" size but they are a great multi species rod if you're fishing for mulitiple salmon species

Actually I have 2 Okuma Convector 15 line counters on the red rods. Okuma is a good choice and pricing is reasonable. Also have 2 Tica Gold Caimans on the Vance's spiral wrap rods. Now I added 2 Velocity 7' rods with black ops reels.

I just picked up a new blue velocity rod with a black opts reel . very nice rod for the price and reel is great to. I was at the ise and noticed that kokanee creek has some new lamiglass rods at a reasonable price also

I watched a video with guys using Lamiglass rods for kokanee, they were eight footers, lots of give I'm going to research them and see.Might be perfect.

You will not be dissointed with the lami's. Best action I've used. Especially the red jj I have. Don't have the white but the classic glass is great too!
I've caught three coho on the red jj as well. Was a great fight and plenty of back bone!

the new velocity rods are every bit as good as the lamiglass and the warranty is much better, break a velocity rod give it to jared with 20 bucks he hands you a new rod. no questions asked. and the quality and action are great because after all jarred designed the lamiglass rods with his name on them. p/s I have a few of my red ones for sell if you pm me.

I found a rod that I bought 15-20 years ago. Its an 8'6" ugly stick "lite". 6-12 lb line. I'm gonna try it with one of those Okuma reels . It's got good backbone and a fairly light tip, should be a good all around setup

because rod tech has vastly improved over the last several years, especially when it comes to kokanee fishing, I didn't mean to offend you and I'm sorry if I did . im sure the ugly stick will be just fine, but there are better options right now. my friend uses ugly sticks exclusively and loves them. I like the koke rods my self.

I have one of the larger Okuma Coldwater reels on a 10ft FethaStick downrigger rod. I love it. Great on salmon last year. At the Portland sportsman show I bought two of the smaller Okuma Coldwater reels and put them on the red JJ Lamiglass rods. I will be testing them out this week at Chelan. I used the White JJ rods last year with smaller Tica reels and they worked out beautifully. If the small ones are as nice as the big ones we will both be smiling.

Okuma, "good heavy reels" on a Koke rod just seems like a contradiction to me. If someone wanted a lead core reel or a bigger species, multi use reel, it makes more sense. The fact that the reels are line counters also makes it a lot less useful as a Koke reel as the majority of the season the set backs are within 25' of the boat. These reels beg to be matched with heavy trout rods for downrigger or long lining.

yes they are good heavy reels,as in not made of plastic and I did say I thought they were a touch big for kokanee but wanted a left handed line counter that I could use for salmon,"coho",I have two of the team kokanee red Jared Johnson 7'6" two piece rods, but I don't think they would be a good match. I like the Okuma Celilo 8'6" ML rod, maybe not the best kokanee rod but that isn't what I asked

well, if we are talking contradiction...i pair these 2 together as my downrigger combos, and we all know its not about the gear, just about the guy/gal handling the gear, best of luck to all...especially to those who step "out of the box" when it comes to kokanee and use atypical gear/methods and do as well or better than most kokanee chasers:
