So got a pretty darn good fishing boat, live in Vancouver and want to enjoy the oppurtunity to fish Kokanee in lake Merwin. I think I got the rod figured out with like a ....OKUMA SST about 7.5'. Questions are what size line and what type line to spool up and how much weight to you usually need for getting down the depth. Also probably just start with wedding rings but if you guys no any articles or want to give me some info I'd appreciate it. I'm a former bankie that got a boat so I've never trolled much. I just want to get started and hoping August is a good time to go.

Thanks,
Brian.

Welcome fish trapper. Sounds like you are ready to hit it hard. Not sure what the kokes are up to in WA but in ID they are starting to turn so not much time left for this season for us. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

can someone at least give me an idea of what lb. of test line to spool for trolling these buggers and approx. how much weight to get down 40-60 ft. Thanks,
Brian.

Rolling

Perhaps this will get the ball rolling. I would spool up my level wind with 15lb tuff line. 50-60yds is plenty of tuff ine. Put some heavier mono on first to build up the spool then the tuff line. You can either tie your beadchain and snap on at this point or put on about 5' of 8lb mono then the snap on the end. Right now the kokes at Merwin are anywhere from 40'-60'. I'd go with 4oz lead. 101chromefish101

I run 14 lb mono. I use fluorocarbon between my dodger and lure 8 to 10 lb.

I would give diving planes a shot. pick up one that release's when the fish

pulls the trip mechanism, like a walker. this way you don't have the weight

fighting against you. pic is provided. look into finding some down riggers in the

offseason. if you do use weight, pick up some rubber snubbers to take the shock

out of the fish fighting agaisnt the weight.

fish trapper, at the top of the board here is a FAQ thread with lots of links to tackle and equipment issues. You should find some good information there. If you are going to be a serious Koke fisherman, start saving your allowance and beer money for a couple of downriggers. Very difficult to really enjoy the sport without them.

If I may offer my 2cents spool your reel with 8lb mono. With the stretchy line and the pole you have chosen you can get away from using the snubber. 8lb is plenty imho.

remember he is thinking of using a 4 to 6 oz weight or a diver. the 8 lb line on a kokanee rod is for down riggers, he needs to look into riggers with light tackle. right now with heavy weight or a jet diver, you are going to let out alot more line, more time for the fish to work against you. snubber is a good idea. most of us were there once, before we all worked our way into riggers.
