One lesson or trick learned last kok season

When trolling, regularly make 90 degree turns for short distances. You will find out very quickly whether the fish want slower or faster presentations.

One thing I have learned, every one does it different! Another thing I have learned, what worked one day may not work the next. Last week end they wanted it slower all the hits were on the inside of a turn, this week end it was on the out side of a turn and going with the wind produced better than into the wind or on the inside of a turn. Last week end I watched 1 boat that averaged a fish every 5 minutes the appeared to be fishing with no weight and 20-25 pulls of line, they were running less than 10 feet deep, today I had better luck at 15-20 feet deep. I met and got to talking to Kokonuts today on the dock at Merwin and he did way better than I did fishing 20 + feet deep.

Hi!

Here's a trick for jigging we use at anchor at night here in Ct.!

Grind up some shoe-peg corn in a blender till its a fine mush.
Freeze the mush in an ice cube tray.
Keep cold!
Put some cubes in a mesh bag or 3" tea ball with weight.
Drop the bag/ball down to the depth you see the Kokes at on your fish finder!
Let mush melt at that depth -> Scent will disperse into a small cloud!
It's like ringing the dinner bell for Kokes!
Works super on slow days!

Mr.Sea-dog great tip except its illegal in Oregon to chum/wish we could just resently we can know use two fishing Poles and it only cost us another $17.00 dollars Wow

Hi MrMike!

Too Bad your not allowed to chum!
Works like magic!
We're allowed 8 Kokes per day here in Ct. -> Most of ours only get between 13-19 inches.
How may are you allowed per day in Oregon?

Food, Food and Food! I'm looking for the 'puke lines' more than my electronics sometimes! Once I find concentrations of food (wherever possible), I know the fish are very close by....tooexcited

Oh like 25 in some lakes 5 in others 15 just depends on the lake. I bet it works good !that why they don't permit it. sizes vary from lake to lake I have landed a 24incher a few yrs back in Wallowa Lake and thats small there has already been a 8 pounder caught already this yr now that a Kokanee

Ok Mr. D mentioned structure and Mav186 mentioned puke lines I am in line with both of those but structure for me has been around points that are forming eddies either from current in reservoirs or from the wind in lakes that is concentrating plankton/Daphnia in those areas, find the food find the Kok’s. This is the second year I have watch the prevailing wind in the early spring push Daphnia into a shallow bay in my favorite lake that was only 12 to 13 feet deep the kokanee were thick in there and I was the only one fishing on them although there were 45 other boats out in the middle of the lake not doing so well, when I go back later in the year they are not there because of warmer water temperatures but then the feeder streams are pushing in from snow melt and find the eddies or as Mav stated find the puke lines and fish on.

I learned to follow the TEAM ROCKY MOUNTAIN guys in there boats. No seriously it was always a plus in putting more koke in the boat when you were trolling on the Gorge and you see them boys trolling in the same area that your in.worthy12

laminac. Ok Puke lines are not a scientific term it is where the current or wind current makes a line near eddies or a wind line that you can see. There will be small to large woody debris, aquatic vegetation, bugs, and plankton, fir and pine needles and what ever else that was floating around on the body of water that your fishing all get collected in a line, under those there will be fish feasting on the bounty of goodies that are drifting around.

cool thanks... yeah google brought up a video of a guy puking just as he crossed a marathon fishing line.... tooexcited I had a feeling that wasn't what you were talking about.

Yes I also have never heard of a puke line/ Know i know I list all lakes I fish for kokanee as a Silver/Nickel lake or Brass or Gold Lake. The result when using two poles the one fishing pole will always out fish the other big time by a wide margin. I fish #3 blades with assortment of different colored Glass beads (the grinding of the glass turn on the fish).I use this with flasher assortment. I've resently went on line to R&K and purchased a big order of different items to use with wobblers/sling blades. I can honestly say until resently I didn't have anything colored in green not a go to color in the lakes I fish. I do have some now. just food for thought

That's okay mrmike, I fish some lakes that others can do really well with green but does nothing for me. It isn't a confidence lure for me so I don't use it. I'd rather fish a lure I have high confidence in than a lure someone else caught a fish with but I'm second guessing the whole time it is out there.

theme fishing

-- I found new lures or technique that I just don't give a chance.. ie. don't work so change to go to rig also best time to try something new isn't when the fish aren't bitting. I find it funny the people try something new and say it doesn't work when their go to lure wasn't producing.
--I discovered theme fishing... on some days I only take the lures or rigs I'm going to test and don't take anything else.. I was testing some spinners by a local manufacturer, in the past I would run a rig I was confident in against the new rig as a comparisson.. ( still like this as valid test) but then got to thinking..if only have the rigs I want to test I found I spent more time and attention to fine tuning or giving them a good work out.. different depth, colour and presentation.. I feel learned a lot more about the lure and how it fished... if not producing I figured out why and where it may be better suited for use rather than thinking about what would better work on the day I tested it. .. also run one lure close to the boat to see how it was working in the water... not necessarily expecting to catch fish on it more to get an Idea what the rig was doing on the other line that I could not see...This is for lures that I haven't used much thus have to get into my head what they are doing so in future I can match the hatch.

Learned this before last year ,but here goes anyway.I'm sure we've are been there when your buddy is getting strike after strike and you aren't. Maybe he has the good side of the boat, but he usually has the hot lure and I don't have any thing close. If you're lucky he'll offer you his extra hot lure ,if not, beg and threaten him.101surrender101 Catching fish will be worth whatever guff your buddy gives you later.stomper

Trollmonkey, everyone that fishes on my boat alternates fish regardless of which rod it comes on. Everyone is a lot happier and it allows for more lure experimenting.

SuperD ,We usually alternate fish too, except for when my bro -in -law is onboard .He is makes a lot of his own gear and runs lead and dipseys,so he runs one side of the boat and I run the other.Usually one of us catches the most and the other one gets the biggest,so it works okay.101chromefish101
