Out of State Boating

Are boats required to be registered when entering into another state to use there waters? My dad use to travel up to Idaho back in the 80's and registered his boat there. They gave him a sticker to display on his boat(good for a year) along with his out of state registration. You didn't have add additional numbers with your current registration. I don't know if this is a requirement now. Is this something thats has to be done like getting a non resident fishing license?

If taken the boat to Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah & Wyoming and haven't registered it to fish their waters.
