My wife (Anne) and I spent 5 days fishing the Duncan Canal and the Sumner Straights this last week. The weather was great. Maybe a little too good. The fishing was slow. We had a good time, but only caught three halibut and 5 salmon. One salmon was a pink. Four salmon were Coho. One of the Halibuts was too small so it was returned to the sea. Caught one Pacific Cod. Returned it to the sea as too small. Several sharks were caught. Several Sculpin were caught and released. We ended up with 35 lbs of fillets.
Hot sunny and calm til Friday. On shore flow brought in the fog with light winds. Anne picked the fishing spot. It was 24 miles from the lodge and the last 12 miles was in pea soup fog. Thank god for the GPS. About 1:eek:o pm the fog cleared, the wind died, and then picked up to 15 mph. the wave were topped with white caps, and the seas were about 3 ft. A fun ride 12 miles up wind. The boat was an 18 ft. open Crestliner with a 50 hp Tahotsu.
Halibut were caught on a Herring rig. The salmon were mostly caught on a Wanafish lure ( a white sguid ). Second best lure was a pink squid with a blade and a treble hook.
