need to buy two decent downrigger rods, one for koke and one set up for lakers. Dont want to break the bank. Will the same rod do for both, best length, any suggestions? Both will have line counter level winds

Man thats a hard gap to bridge. I would go 7'-8.5' long. The 10-17lb Batson RDR blank is a good blank for 10" to way bigger fish, not sure any body is building on these commercially. You also might check out Ugly Stiks, they have a variety of actions. Good Luck TM101chromefish101101chromefish101

dont have to be the same. Lakers pull bigger heavier lures and plugs so what does say ,,mail order or ebay offer that would be the most fitting for each. I am new to dr,s, this cannon mag ten electric is my first. Have always flatlined with bananas or lead line so now need to rig up for the dr and trust you all to steer me in the right direction.

I'm no expert here but I love the Lamiglas CGR762L rods for Kokanee. I just bought a second one today. I think they are a great deal at 70 bucks. Or maybe it was $80...

I just got the Lamiglas CG70DR Classic Glass 7' downrigger rods this year they are great, got two at BiMart on sale $34.00 each. I also bought a Lamiglas CGR762L 7'6" Team Kokanee rod at sportsmans for about $72.00for long lineing. All have Okuma magda pro 20dlx line counter reels.

in the boonies here and have to rely on net.. What the opinion on the Shimano tdr or Cab depthmaster?? Daiwa heartland. Tough to buy without first handling.

Daiwa makes a really nice ultralight Kokanee Rod (Spinmatic model #762ULFB) We have 4 of these and they are the first rods I pick for Kokes. They are tough and load up prefectly in the Down Riggers. We've had them for three years with no problems at all.

They are light enough to make Kokes resemble a real fighting fish and still have enough backbone for larger grade Kokes.

At $34.99 each I don't think there's a better rod value out there.

I have 2 Vances tackle spiral wrapped rods, 7'6". They are great Koke rods. They load up well, and have enough backbone for larger fish. They do make one a little larger for salmon/lake trout. Around $80.00 from Vances website.

okuma SST Kokanee 7'6'' good rod under $50.00

I will make it 3 votes for the Okuma SST, they are noodle rods, fiberglass not graphite, lots of guides and load up great on the dr, bought two this year and teamed them with Tica 100's, great setups for kokes, definately got more fish to the boat with the soft action. Used Daiwa Spinmatics for a couple of years, they are really spinning rods (duh) and need a couple more guides, they are graphite and a little stiffer action but thin, light blanks so they work ok. Both the Spinmatic and the Okuma SST rods mentioned in this thread are way too light a rod to put a Magda 20 line counter on though. I run two Magda 15 line counters on 7' 6" light action Ugly Stik's for browns and they are bombproof. No lakers in my neck of the woods but this setup has worked great for rainbows and browns up to 8 lbs.

That's what I use my 8' 6" Heartlands for, downriggers and long lining for Roosevelt rainbows in winter. I team them up with Daiwa Sealine 17s and they work very nicely.thumbsup
