Just sold several rods and a couple of the had been faided by the sun when not in use I leave the in rod holders and dont want my new ones to do the samething I have seen two differnt types of ROD SOCKS one is very heavy material just like a gun sock the other is nylon nice and lite material however they have all been black and didnt know if the black fabric would get warm and tend to do the same thing or if they are a pain to deal with in general

Most rod socks I've seen just fit over the rod without the reel. I had a friend that sews make me some custom ones out of material I picked out at the fabric store. They fit the rod and the real together.

my boat was already at the upholsters for a couple small projects so hauled down rod & reel today to have 5 made pick them up tomorrow

You guys must be really set up if you are concerned about rod socks. I'm still trying to find the ones that go on my feet.

And if you can't sew, or know anyone that does, pick your fabric, something that won't snag, and use some fabric glue. For our South East friends yes I suppose duct tape will work.101justkidding101

I was tinkering around with some sunbrella fabric last year that is used to make bimini tops and found this material to be suitable for rod covers. I have a industrial sewing machine that handles this material just fine but as light as it is should be able to be sewn on a regular machine. Its not like the heavy canvas material that is still used for for storage covers. One drawback is sunbrella should be cut with a hot knife to prevent the edges from fraying but these type knives cost alot of $$$$'s. So, next best thing for this type of job would be pinking shears, sew edges together and pull outside in to hide seam. Works just fine that way. I made the covers to work around the reels. Going to redesign the covers soon to include covering reel.

my sew guy made me some and they cover the reels as well the fabric I picked out is real light nylon and even with this very light material there is still enough weight that the rods get a bend in them from the covers Lamiglas 7' ul 2-8# so going to just run them and see what happens.
