so i found a couple scotty 1106 electric downriggers (5' booms) for
$400obo/both. said they were in good condition. i think im going to get them, but was wondering if there is anything i should ask him about them? they are out of my state so i cant check them out. anything you guys would ask before buying? aslo, does anyone know the weight on these? he'll have to ship them to me and i dont want to commit if they are going to cost a fortune to get here.

thanks

That's killer deal on 1106 Scottys. I guess you could try to beat the price down, but that's a great price on two. It is $400 for both, right, not each?
I paid over $330 each for my two. But I got to see them before I bought them.
If you want to dicker, you could ask:

1. Do they operate well?
2. How long have they been sitting? (when they are sitting, they aren't being used...they might be in great shape}
3. When were the steel cables last replaced?
4. Are there any dings, scratches in them?
5. Have they had the upgrade that keeps the belt from popping off?
6. Do they have one drive belt or two? If two, they are an older model.
7. Do they come with downrigger weights? An even better deal if so.
8. Is he the original owner? Did he send in the warranty cards? Note that Scottys are warranted for life to the original owner. If he has the blank warranty cards, that's even better.
9. Are they stolen? (A tough question to ask, but I'd wonder, based on the price). Does he have a boat, or did he? Is he selling a bunch of other stuff?

Personally, I wouldn't ask too many questions before I pulled out my wallet.
One time, a friend of mine and I were at a flea market and there was a killer deal on some furniture that I needed. I was asking questions to the seller about the furniture and someone just walked up and handed the seller cash.
I learned a lesson on that one. "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is an old bit of wisdom that may apply here.

sounds right. i did a quick quote on the ups site and it came up with a hair over $46..ground. i put the weight at 75lbs. to be safe. now i cant get ahold of the guy...damn it!!

I'll second that don't blink on a good deal idea. Just picked up a pair of 1116s, new in the box. For the pair $400, plus a tuna rod/reel that I wasn't gettng much use out of. Ad was posted at 5am and I was going back and forth about calling before 8am. I'm sure they wouldn't have lasted the morning.

Now I've got the 1116s up front and a couple of 1101s in the back. Ready for koke season. thumbsup
